#10343: set up private |
by olddaddy

Hi all, I am your worst nightmare, a newb but an older newb with a question. So yes, I appreciate your patience.
I am trying to setup up AC as a private server, basically, my son wants me to game against him, ok, fine, however, I want to set up my computer as main, and he can then join me. I have a 4 port router and Comodo firewall, not too concerned about allowing requests, that much I can handle. I am not sure what settings specifically I use to set it up as private. Last time I used private, I had a slew of people on there. lol. So I have been reading but still a bit confused.
Thank you

-mlocalhost
pass that to your server binary, then it will not register on the masterserver, thus nobody will know about it and then they can't connect ;-)
HTH ... and have fun fragging your son :)

Well, newer protocoll suggests you're not using the latest release ... I'll just hazard a guess here and assume you're running on a linux and installed the game (which (incidentally)) via the distros package manager ...
Well : Don't!
The people that "took charge" of these packages don't really seem to be very active - the packages are chronically out-of-date.
Go to the sourceforge repository and download the current release!
I'd give you a link, but I dunno if you want Sauerbraten, AssaultCube ... or whatever ... the links to sourceforge are available (or at least obviously reachable) from the main page of each of those games!

I've been having some problems with saving maps, I can save and load them fine when I am in cube 2 but when I search for them in packages/base directory I can't find them, and a couple days later I find 2 of the 6 maps in my home directory, and the others I can load and edit in the game, but I can't find them anywhere on the whole computer!!!
I am using Linux.

Just for info sake, I set up Hamachi to try and run the game in private but has no options to do so. Unless you need the premium, I can't do anything with it. Well, chat. That's about all.
Thanks

You're talking about a VPN - right?
You don't need to do that.
Although - since you seem to have thought it necessary - I'm assuming your son and you do not share the same LAN (meaning your both on a different internet access)
Just add "-mlocalhost" to the server binary and make a note of your external IP ... maybe via http://whatismyip.org/
then tell your son to open up his game and enter "/connect 123.123.123.123" (with the approptiately corrected IP address) ...
he could even enter it beforehand into his servers.cfg ... or do a "/addserver 123.123.123.123" and then use the serverbrowser.

You'll have to set the server to listen to the IP that your Hamachi client has. It's featured prominently on the Hamachi window (as you've seen!), and the server batch file should just need this added to it:
-iHamachiIPAddress
Replacing, of course, HamachiIPAddress with the actual address. Then your son should be able to connect to your Hamachi IP (/connect HamachiIPAddress) and you should be able to play privately. :)
If you were playing Sauer, it would make the server.bat look something like this:
bin\sauerbraten.exe -d -c4 -iHamachiIPAddress %1 %2 %3 %4 %5

Mmmh. Wouldn't a VPN make it possible for the other members of this "virtual private network" to do a "lanconnect" ... I mean ... that's the whole point of a VPN isn't it?!?!
But ... this is shooting at pidgeons with cannonballs folks ... you simply DO NOT NEED to create a VPN to play these games privately!
Simply don't register the server publically (meaning "-mlocalhost") and connect manually (meaning "/connect IP").

Not possible, don't you think there'd be at least one example of this in the release already if such a feature'd be available ?! ;-)

actually, you can create demos to play as these cinematics, but capturing them, and loading the next level afterward will be a definite problem :D, least as far as I'm concerned at the moment. never bothered to actually try to do this, though a sleep 60000 [map blah] should do it
