cheater in sauerbraten

by CybbERNeTTikSSZ on 09/11/2006 02:58, 44 messages, last message: 09/22/2006 22:11, 16749 views, last view: 05/18/2024 06:03

I was playing mult on sauerbraten today and this person was jumping over buildings and seemed to have way too many bullets. Was he cheating or is there a setting i don\'t know about?

I also seen a cheater, someone was using a machine gun in instagib one time. I don't know what he did or how he did it, but it was really fucking cheap! Also Corror, don't fuck around with the multiplayer of Cube 2 if it isn't for your own mod, It really makes it harder for us honest players to achieve the victorys we rightfully deserve.

Sauerbraten MP gaming somewhat relies on people not doing these things. I hope for this source-modding shit to eventually be confined by means of protocol numbers set by the main programmers ( same as cube1 ).

Until that, or some other method is put in place, this kind of thing will continue to happen.

We cannot expect this unique protocol method to be used right now, since there are so many releases/updates going on. Sauer will keep on changing, and idiots will keep trying to find new ways to cheat.

I suggest getting a server locked down with the master options, if this kind of thing is happening a lot.

I have to admit, cheaters are far and few between in Cube, because all the cheaters are little script kiddies and they have no idea how to discover what the protocol number is for the official Cube binaries, so they cant cheat..

On the other hand, Sauerbraten cheats are normally pretty obvious (thousands of rockets, 10,000 health??) which is far better than some games like Counter-Strike, where 1 in 3 people hack, and you can barely tell (wallhacks are pretty hard to see if the cheater doesnt make it obvious)..

Also, people who cheat are usually very crap at the game, and they want attention. If they have master and you cant get it to kick them, simply leave the server, go someplace else.

It does nothing but annoy and make blatantly obvious there are cheating capabilities. Sure, have fun, but in a private game.

As I have said, We aren't cheating, so I don't see the problem, I was looking for blahville for help with the array (which one is ammo, and damage) and most of the server admins (the ones that were present) didn't seem to mind, if no damage is done.

you are sabotaging the official game, wether your modification gives you an advantage or not. The source is there to make mods / own games, not to modify the official multiplayer with.

c0rdawg is being crucified in another thread atm for making a simple mod that shows the server stats on a PHP page.. and you think that being able to mass-spam grenades thanks to your UB3R-1337 H4X is ok?

Cowdarg: You are cheating, changing the game to what it was not intended to do, no matter the effect is cheating. Plus, you are giving a bad example. If you wanna make a mod, make a mod, but don´t mess with the official game in public please.
Have fun all you like, but not in public ffs. You ruin the reputation of the game.

Show some respect to aard, eihrul and the other coders please.

Exactly praxibel. "mod source and play on a closed server". This is just the point we´re making here. No need to get rude.

Its all about political correctness.. and zlib doesnt allow the webbased server monitor, while theoretically its not wrong and doing no damage.. its against the license, and Aardappel and eihrul dont like the license being broken.

This is an OLD discussion.. remember Aphid's ranked server? Again he was crucified as badly as people like wasda and merv, when instead of stealing components of Sauerbraten and calling them his, he liked Sauerbraten enough to host a server and make it an extra special one with rankings..

To be perfectly in-line with the zlib license, c0rdawg is apparently 'cheating' by hosting a server for Sauerbraten with his bandwidth that is modded, and shows who is on the server on a PHP page.

Its a shame, because I just see that as the act of a dedicated Sauerbraten fan.

I´m not really caring about stats on servers personally, but then it´s pretty hard to draw a line there. A modified server is a mod and should be clearly distinguishable.

I was more talking about modified game mechanics on a public server. That´s what´s not correct at all, no matter what they do.

The hacked servers would not be supported and would provide a handy test-bed for stuff.

It's a good idea.

OoOoOoOOoOOooO prax you're going to get burned now!!!11!11!!111!1!!1

"Aard kept on saying "Be polite and nice etc and we will let you use sauer content, ask permission" etc and then he flames someone for making something good out of the good stuff hes done. Has he politley talked to c0rdawg politley about his hacks? no, and that stinks of hypocrite."

I dont mean to stop you while you're 'on-fire' with your rant but.. all Aardappel said was this:

"the problem is that you are changing the original game as designed by me, no matter how harmless. If what you make is a mod, then your mod should supply both a client and server, incompatible with the original multiplayer game."

He hasnt made any physical threats to c0rdawg.. yet.. or really made a judgement, sounds more matter of factly to me. But at the end of the day it is Aardappel's decision, and I think he will probably want c0rdawg to stick to the rules of the zlib license.

See I doubt Aardappel's stance on this has changed since Aphid's ranked server.

Could some one explain to me how they can go trough the protocol ?

In Cube 1 there used to be a protection from modded source compiled clients/servers via _closed source_ protocol aspects of the binaries.

In Cube 2 this is (not yet (!?!)) the case, so anybody can recompile the sources w/o bumping the protocol (meaning "pretending to be the same as a vanilla binary") ... that's all there is to it.

Actually you should bump the protocol if you are modding the source, but since you then can't play on the current network I guess most people don't do it ... maybe they think they'll get kudos for having some nifty modifications - like a totally unrealistic reloadtime for their GL.

Play with people you 'trust', and if servers start doing weirdness then I guess play on servers you 'trust'.

Crossing over between thread now, but mods should either run their own community and servers, or instead contribute to Saue by talking to Aard & co. Since the core developement/technology is Saue then it seems more beneficial for all to support Saue...

Or better yet, both.

There'll be situations where something is wanted that won't be put into the official game.
