Performance on Linux.

by maaarcooose on 09/07/2006 18:06, 26 messages, last message: 05/04/2007 17:06, 8986 views, last view: 05/18/2024 04:41

I've recently installed Sauerbraten on my Laptop (dual booting Kubuntu/WinXP) under both OS's.

Under Windows it runs fine, loads up levels and runs with very good performance.

Under Linux, it runs fine when you first load it up, but as soon as you load another level, the performance drops down to about 4 fps for every map I load. Even after exiting the game, the entire system seems to run slow afterwards until I reboot, and restart sauer.
From what I can see there are no processes still running from sauer.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and know how to fix it?

Cheers....

Start the game and load a map.
Change Console and see what \"top\" says about other processes.

I don\'t know Kubuntu, but is module nvidia for nvidia-cards and fglrx for ati-cards loaded ?

GLX enabled ?

I\'m on Debian SID and sauerbraten is working excellent. (except some cheating guys with uber-minigun and 2^15 health)

God luck

@nightmare
What is the output from:

# lsmod | grep nvidia

Maybe it helps:

i also have a problem with Sauerbraten on Linux/Ubuntu.
I searched the forum found nothing, searched again found somthing. I should go to my src directory(in a console) an should type somthing with make;cp sauer_client ... but when i do that it says that there is noch sauer_client.

My problem in sauer is that the sound comes 2 secounds to late and when i quit the screen freezes and i can't do somthing . I hope there is a solution for my problem because i don't want to run it with wine cedega or even vmware...

Iirc, it has something to do with wich sound demon you use in x. You might try using a diffrent one, and see if that changes anything.

I'm running a P4 Dell (1.8Ghz I think) 512MB ram and an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000.

I've got all the graphics modules setup correctlly and I can run other 3D shooters no problem. Some get a little laggy with only 64mb graphics memory, but not too bad.

GLX module is loaded in my xorg config. I'm running fglrx ati drivers.
It did take me a while to get my ATI setup, but this seems to work. As for other processes I've not seen any that would cause this, but I will hunt a little more.

I know that ALSA's OSS emulation can cause delays like that with, e.g., the Flash plugin. Other than that, I dunno. It probably is a similar issue though.

Stuff like this is really common under Linux. I don't have a desktop machine with it on it at the moment (but it seems that it might be useful to now) to test, but from previous experiences:

* Turn OFF or idle (which means it isn't using the dsp device) any sound daemons.
* Use DRI for X.Org (Direct Rendering Interface, read up on it if you're not familiar).
* Ensure your GL implementation is up-to-date.
* Ensure you're using ALSA and not OSS[/free]. Although, SDL shouldn't use OSS if it detects ALSA (can be overriden with an environment variable though).

This is a known Ubuntu bug with sdl sound. I fixed it by installing libsdl1.2debian-all (which replaces libsdl1.2debian-esd - or was it libsdl1.2debian-alsa? - I don't remember) and disabling software sound mixing under System -> Preferences -> Sound. Works perfectly now.

Dunno about that one. The game occasionaly locks up but not when I'm quiting.

Or use no sound daemon at all (no arts, no esd...)

That's a bug with Flash Player itself, and not with Alsa. I had that problem also on a 2.4 kernel with OSS.

Yeah, it was just a thought. "Had" that problem? How did you fix it? Using 2.6.17 here.

I "had" that problem when I used kernel 2.4 with OSS.
Now I have kernel 2.6 with alsa, and I "continue having" this problem. :)

Hi, I cannot confirm the above problems,
I'am using ubuntu 5.10, xubuntu 6.04.1 and zenwalk 3.0 with NVIDIA proprietary drivers and sauerbraten runs perfect on all thee systems.

Same here - no problems.
Using stable Debian 3.1 (Sarge)
and unstable Debian Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (Dapper Drake).
Both with proprietary NVIDIA drivers for my GF 6600 GT.

The new release (water edition) even speeded things up!

#16: Cube runs SLOW in Ubuntu Dapper!

by mdolan on 05/03/2007 20:08

After 4 months of trying I have finally got the basic Cube running in Ubuntu 32 bit Dapper 6.06 on my nVidia 6100 Biostar with an AMD 64 3400 2.2 GHz.

It runs because I could finally install libSDL_image1.2 and libSDL_mixer1.2. But the framerate is so slow the game is unplayable. What else do I need to install to get it to run at the right framerate?

If you're having problems installing drivers (as Drakas suggested), upgrade to 7.04 feisty, comes with restricted drivers built in, no sweat.
