ProDesktop useful at all?

by Passa on 08/25/2006 04:56, 10 messages, last message: 09/04/2006 01:04, 2037 views, last view: 05/04/2024 22:15

I only know how to model half-decently in ProDesktop, one of those CAD programs..

Is there any way I can export to a certain format that can be exported to this etc etc until I can get a md3 or md2?

Here is a screenshot of the export list in the menu so you can see what it can export to:

The only one of those looking familiar to me is VRLM. Both milkshape and blender can import them. I got no idea how good they´ll do it, but I´d try it.

For blender, use this:

Doesnt work in Blender.. says that its not a blender format (thats after going import>VRLM 1.0)

I'll try Milkshape now and see how that goes.

Sorry for the misinformation, there´s no vrml import for ms3d, only export.

You´re probably out of luck with this application. (unless there are plug-ins for it available). Try one of the free modelling apps (there´s lots), or buy milkshape.. (most modelling apps are somewhat similar to cad anyways).
Anything that can export one of the major formats like .3ds or .obj.
Either ms3d, or any free app and use blender to export to md3.
Or get into blender for modelling too.

Even if you can find a way to export/import from ProDesktop, chances are the model will have a very high poly count (for use in games anyway). I went thru this myself not long ago. I use INVENTOR and AutoCAD all the time for modeling at work and found ways to make .md2 models. But the poly count was far too high to be used "real time" in cube/sauer.

Milkshape is ok, but if your used to using "pro" software for modeling (solid modeling / sheet metal, blank creation), the change to milkshape (and similar "hobby" modelers) can be difficult to use.

Best of luck - MitaMAN

So, assuming I don't bother with trying to export from ProDesktop and whatever else.. what modelling program should I try learn to use? Assuming I want something that is very useful for Sauerbraten (near perfect md3 support, preserves animations, etc etc) and something that is resonably easy to learn for a newbie, what program should I start with?

There is no program out there that will preserve animation on md3 import. They all expect bones. The only program that can import md2´s with frames is q2modeller, and misfit modeller. The latter is pretty similar to Milkshape and free.

I would suggest Milkshape. It´s simple to use, lots of tutorials. Exports md2/md3 without problems. And also supports a huge variety of other file formats. Has a Simple uv tool that is sufficient for your first models.
Imho very good to learn about all the stuff, and later when you need it you can move on to a more advanced application, when you know what exactly you want and need from a model app.

With blender you can do more advanced modelling, and the md3 export works well too. Only the md2 thing is a bit complicated, but you won´t have to use md2 anymore really.

If you want to make mapmodels and guns milkshape is fine. Also for animating guns and mapmodels it is all you need.

If you want to do characters Blender might be the better choice since it has more advance sculpting, unwrapping and animation functionality. (I heard they even develop displacement paint for it).

Awesome, thanks makkE, I'll give Milkshape a try :)

for general modelling, can I recommend Silo again. No it does not have md3 export directly nor does it do animation at all... but best modelling app I have ever seen.

Prax you can try "misfit modeller". It´s pretty simple, comparable to milkshape 3d.
You could probably do ms3d tutorials on it.

There´s also

a bit more advanced sub-d modeller.

Prax, what's wrong with blender? Do the tutorial (link down there) and you'll be able to do quite much within a day.
