Is this thing active? (Multi-Player Wise)

by Evlesoa on 07/29/2006 00:36, 19 messages, last message: 08/24/2006 05:39, 1670 views, last view: 05/01/2024 02:14

When I tried multiplayer, nothin worked, is anyone even active on this thing? The servers seem to be down 99.999%

The new version just came out, so servers need to update too, wait a few days and there should be more servers available.
Usually there are ppl playing this ;) Not many, but enough to have fun games. Check back in a few days ;)

Usually if there are people playing they'll all be on the same server. Which means you might have to play on a server that doesnt have the best connection to your area. The servers are up for me, But i dont see anyone on. O well.

"Which means you might have to play on a server that doesnt have the best connection to your area."

It doesn't matter, Sauerbraten is largely unaffected by ping. I personally do not notice the difference between 5 ping on my server and 300 ping on a US server.

anyway, to answer his question.

Yes its active. Last time i checked, cube is a bit more active than cube2 when it comes to multiplayer. Just go into a server and see who follows.

Normally if you join a server it will take about 3 minutes before someone joins ;-)

"cube is a bit more active than cube2"
You'd be surprised, I get alot more activity on my Sauerbraten server than my Cube server.

It MUST be affected by ping, come on, there\'s a 0.3 second delay from the client having 300 ping to the server.

But you\'re right too, the netcode seems very good on this one. You maybe don\'t notice the lag, but it is there ;)

The lag is there, yes, but thanks to the netcode, you have hit prediction and you will actually NOT get outpinged, everything you hit gets the damage, the server will simply not decide who hit first, and will not drop any hits it recieves from clients.
That makes Sauer and cube the most playable games on high pings in exsistance.
Of course it leads to odd situations, where your opponend drops dead and you get shot by him a few msecs after that, but it´s just fair, since he hit you in his time.

I'm curious, does the server do any arbitration of this? That is, if I shot and killed player X, and player X has a full 200 msec of lag so that he kills me _after_ (in universal, server, non-arbitrary time) I killed him (although locally he was still alive), does he get the kill? Or do all local hits count?

I'm just curious, because there is always a lot of talk of CS-style mods for Sauer and I was considering the feasability... but the lethality of CS puts Instagib to shame so there would be a _lot_ of coincident-kills.

You both get your frags :D
The only time the server decides who was first in his own time are when things are picked up.(and mr.ping 250 is denied the quad for example).

Which is why a realistic multiplayer mod will never appear for Sauerbraten :P

Trust me, talk to a Counter-Striker about the mythical rego and you will see what I mean, its the Counter-Strike equivalent of the force from Star Wars :D

I am glad to hear that...theres enough "realism games" around to make me sick.

BTW, why would a person think it's not possible for both people to die? This could happen in reality imho. I don't care about the "lag factor"...if you're that fucking serious about playing games, then you need to get a life :)

Also, I don't care about CS, and I would like to think that most dedicated cube/sauer players would agree with me....CS is CS, sauer is sauer...don't compare them.

I didn't compare em, you should just see a CS forum and hear em ranting about the mythical 'rego' which you only seem to notice after 500+ hours of wasted time playing CS. I tend to get bored of games if I don't pwn everyone at them after 2 hours of playing :P

BF2 is always touted as realistic, along with games like CS and COD. In reality they are not realistic at all :P
Realistic is something like a Rainbow Six.

Real life is even MORE realistic :P

#13: Multiplayer on Localnetwork?

by PhilX on 08/04/2006 15:31

Hello everyone,

I use SuSe 10.1 and my brother Win98, we want to play cube over local network.

But how does it work?

We could I make a local cube-sever? I can\\\'t find this option in menue.

Ya, I have the same question about setting up a game over LAN. I just have two Win XP computers on a wireless network and I\'m not sure how to set up a game. I see the menu has something about connecting to a local host, but I\'m still not sure how to do it.

Sorry. I accidentally hit "enter" in the wrong text box.

Anyway, to set up a game on your local network, here's what worked for me:

1. Start the Sauerbraten server application. Write down the IP address of the computer running the server (the internal IP, not external, if you have one).

2. Open Sauer on the computer with the server running.

3. Open the multiplayer menu and select "lanconnect." If it works, good. If not, try "Connect localhost."

4. Open Sauer on the computer that doesn't have the server running.

5. Open the multiplayer menu and select "lanconnect." If it doesn't work, hit "t" and then type: /connect <ip you wrote down>.

Good luck!

Cheers man, just answered a question I had that I hadn't bothered to look into yet.

Might be good if the client can be a server too (other than just localconnect), like most FPS games.
