Sauerbraten on a dual core

by Kaiser on 07/06/2006 15:42, 8 messages, last message: 07/12/2006 01:13, 1260 views, last view: 05/01/2024 15:35

I have an AMD dual core and with Sauerbraten it only seems to want to use 50% of the cpu power. Either 50% of both cores or 100% of a single core. I have been told that some programs (such as Photoshop) are designed to recognize dual core processors and use their full capacity. Out of curiosity is there any way this could be implemented into Sauerbraten? I would really like to get more than just 15 FPS :). Maybe I should just invest in a Mac G5. The ones I use on campus normally run at about 200 FPS.

No amount of processors > 1 will make Sauer run better. You need a better 3D card.

look on the task manager(or some other equivalent program if u dont have windows) while sauer is running and see if only one of the cores is in use...

As far as I understand it, Sauer is almost entirely single threaded, like most games (Quake 3 and 4 being the most notable exceptions).
This isn't much of an issue, since it is, as eihrul said, normally GPU bound. The only place that multithreading the rendering might be useful would be on geonomentry limited maps, which have yet to make an appearence.

Well I guess that I will start looking for a better graphics card then. Currently I am using an ATI Radeon XPRESS 200... whatever the hell that is. It\\\'s a media center computer so this card has a build in tv tuner and everything. But I do understand that the card is the issue now. I might get a new one but I\\\'m not entirely sure. I think I will stick with ATI but if I can find an nvidia one that isnt too expensive I might get that instead.

If you want to avoid trouble, get an nvidia. It´s better to run sauer, ati has somewhat slacky opengl support that causes trouble frequently.

well the thing is I am not to familiar with video cards really. I'm not entirely sure what compatability issues there are between them. My computer is an HP and from what I have seen almost all HP computers with an AMD processor will use an ATI video card in them. My guess would be that there arent any compatability issues if I switch over to nvidia but I just want to be sure about that.

Odds are there's nothing HP actually made in your computer other than the case and printer and maybe some cables.

HP computers make me sick, @ department stores here, you ask for a gaming pc and they will give you a system with a 9600XT and it will cost $4000 for the system..

No, your system will run fine if you put in a Nvidia card. Nvidia ftw :)
