cube: random skybox

is there any way of using cube cfg code to make a random (out of a certain list of them) skybox appear each time someone loads up the map?

yes
checkout playasong in data/default_map_settings.cfg to get you started
in network game this will result in players having different backgrounds ... so the question really is ...
why?

i am doing a (size reduced greatly, only the major features included) copy of the tng enterprize, and i want it to look like the ship is in a different place each time.

For cube - I've just checked it - this works :
<SNIP>
alias lost "makke/highplane socksky/desert socksky/frozen"
alias rix (rnd 3)
at $lost $rix
loadsky $s
echo selected sky # $rix
</SNIP>

Apart from the $s stuff this would work more or less in sauerbraten too,
just make one line out of the all but last two lines above like so :
loadsky (at $lost $rix)
and replace the two "alias" lines with "=" lines (if you like)

Well it wouldent work right, if it loaded with a space skybox, the lighting woulden't suit it. So no matter what the lighting will only suit one skybox.

well, if the goal is to make it look like Enterprise is in orbit around a different planet each map load (for whatever reason) I could imagine a set of X textures all having the sun (which is the only relevant part for lighting IMO) at the same position and just a different "fill-in" for the planet ... more or less like they did it on TNG - IIRC they were mostly using the green swirly planet texture and sometimes something a little "other worldy" in hue ;-)
