Cube 2 for PSP

by edfgfgregfd on 06/26/2006 17:22, 15 messages, last message: 07/04/2006 13:47, 1705 views, last view: 04/11/2024 01:38

Would porting it to the PSP be possible? I mean, I don\\\\\\\'t know squat about programming, but I might be inspired if it was possible to rework it to run on the PSP under the 1.50 firmware. Is it possible?

Anything is possible.

Feasible? No.

Psp:
-low specs
-needs a dev kit that costs a lot of $.

So theoretically: Yes , with a lot of work.
Practically: No

Playing a shooter with gamepad = not worth the effort anyways.

Yea on specs, a PSP is seriously underpowered in comparison to a PDA, new PDAs can run Quake 3. I doubt the PSP could manage Cube, let alone Cube 2

It could be funny on DS, with the Metroid Prime Hunters Gameplay (D-Pad to move, stylus for the view, L to shoot, and tactil screen to change weapon (little icons in the right of the screen)).

But i don't know anything about the dev kits.

For info, an acessory (under the form of a GBA cartridge) can support memory cards and permit to read MP3, AVI, etc... and some applications.

But the dev will be hard, due to the double processor, isn't it or i'm Noob ?

And when i see the power of the DS... Cube 2 can't be supported. Why not Cube 1 ? ^^

Never going to happen. Aardappel I'm sure has better things to do than port Cube to Nintendo DS. But the source code is there, so anyone can do anything really.

Also, if its almost impossible to get it working on PSP, then its not going to be easier on a DS. A DS does not have nearly enough power.

I don’t think the PSP theoretically lacks the processing power needed for a Sauer port – and with port I stress total conversion and an end result looking more like Cube than Sauer. Sony flies the “PSP Brings the Power of the PlayStation 2 to the Palm of Your Hand” marketing tag quite frequently but despite this obvious exaggeration I think Sauerbraten could be ported without too much blood, sweat and mother f*ckn tears. Utilising the two graphics cores you’ll have access to roughly 4MB VRAM coupled with a couple of nice transformation and rendering instructions – don’t expect native OpenGL to help you though and apart from graphics the WiFi networking is another headache waiting to happen. But like you all said, it is not viable, not viable at all – it will be a complete conversion but I would be heavily impressed if anyone attempted it. The dev kit is however the biggest issue, assuming money is no option (is it ever?). The biggest problem is the kit’s dvd and umd drive – when testing discs the kit is so “intelligent” by allowing you to burn a dvd emulating a umd. Ok, fair enough, you could test your build via Ethernet but alas, before this turns into a rant – basic answer, better you than me! Why everyone always runs towards consoles is beyond me!

consoles are:

-more affordable themselves (decent gaming PC:~£400+, most consoles: ~£100)
-games are generally cheaper
-easier to run and no need to wait for install

hence consoles are more common in people's homes than PCs, and making a cube/sauer port to them would help us become more well known...

has anyone ever thought about distributing cube/sauer on CDs with an installer like commercial games?

Erm, you realise just about every home (in Australia anyways) has a computer with an internet connection? Might just be Britain CC_machine ;-)

And people would need to mod their consoles to run it. People mod their consoles to play illegal backups of games and homebrew software (emulators etc). But not homebrew games, its not likely anyway.

Exposure will be about 5-10 people (including CC_machine)

If someone made such a disc, I would replicate it and distribute it to many of my narrower-minded friends, maybe rope them in. Who knows, it'd be interesting.

As far as why people choose consoles, it's like choosing Mac over Linux- how much do you want to learn and deal with. A Mac can do some very impressive things, just as a console can, and generally it can do it without *too* much headache for the user. People who buy consoles don't want to have to deal with compatability issues, installs, erratic performance, etc. Usually they can buy a game in full confidence of never lagging out or losing their saves.

There are consoles which offer things that PCs don't, unless you want to bend over backwards. In my case, the DS... I've been playing "Feel the Magic" recently, and honestly can't picture myself trying to play that game with a PC mic and a Wacom tablet. The DS, the gameboy, heck even the Gamecube, they can all do things rarely seen on PCs- not the least of these being carted around in a duffel bag. I hate lugging my PC (or even an XBox) to a LAN party, while I can just stash my DS in my pocket of grab my 'Cube by it's handy handle.

Point it, consoles have a somewhat different place than PCs, so shouldn't be disregarded entirely.

"Feel the Magic", btw, is surreally fun. Don't knock it until you've played a few of the minigames, they're disturbingly addictive. Sega does know it's stuff.
