if we find a completely new engine structure that is much better than cube 2's. Sofar, there is a LOT of growth room in cube 2... as is being demonstrated.

Since the website got upgraded to have "Sauerbraten/Cube 2" as the title, all newbies to the site now call it Cube 2.

Well on Cube 3 (if Aardappel and his team stick together long enough to make it) like Aardappel said, he will need a completely new engine structure that is still extremerly easy to use to make maps (im thinking mind reading or something? ;) and still follow his programming philosophy, simplicity.

For now, Sauerbraten has a big future!

i supose there will be a cube 3 when somebody squares the circle :)

and by that i mean, apart from making a bad joke, i mean allowing the use of spheres instead/inside of cubes

of course that's againt current dev philosophy i can't think of some other radical change that would justify a complete revamp atm

Sauerbraten is not comparable to a commerical game. Its too different. But it competes with my installed commerical games quite well, and is probably my 2nd or so most played game.

C:Uber is an example that one day Sauerbraten will be comparable to commercial quality stuff, right now its too manual for the average n00b user. Modern games have menus that force-feed the n00b user.

yeah.. there was some n00b on a sauer server yesterday complaining about how the /screenres commands didnt work in sauer and claimed they did in cube1...

omg.. n00bs will be n00bs i spose

but anyways, why are there screenres commands on the menu if they dont work?

I personally think that both Cube 1 & 2 can blow the likes of Quake 2 or 3 away. The cube series comes second place from the Doom series. Do u agree? :D

Idunno, there are tons of ways you could model things that would be similarly simple to Cube/Sauer that woudl work well. For example, if you want the system to be more "resolvable" than Sauer, you could force things back to a pure octree (no moving corners) but allow any cube to be filled with a landscape of any resolution - so the map is built entirely out of cubes and landscapes. Would make the maps more analyzable because they're regular.

Alternately, you could design an engine where all the rooms are intersected spherical volumes. Would be very challenging, but that would be awesome for mutable terrain - every mutation just adds new spheres, and any old spheres that are enveloped would be culled out. Tricky part would be dealing with "covers" of spheres and collapsing groups into a larger volume. Still, that'd be the way to go if you wanted a 3D Dig Dug.
