Sauerbraten copyrights

What can I do, and what am I not allowed to do with Sauerbraten - if I do anything with it... such as creating my own game out of it?

If you want to be discrete, please e-mail me.

the problem is not the source license... infact, if it was GPL, projects like this would never happen:

http://www.proper-games.com/technology.html

The big problem sauer faces is that people don't notice the difference between the SOURCE CODE (which is open source) and the GAME (which freeware, i.e. it is free to use, but not free to steal stuff from or base your game upon). I have no idea how I can make this clearer, since people like the original poster clearly don't read docs, and just pick up the scent of: free game + source available = my personal FPS creator kit.

Maybe someone on the Cube forum is a lawyer, you can get them to sue people :)

Nah seriously, I woulden't worry too much about it. While alot of people do this, their creations suck, you are better off sitting back until it dies, rather than wasting your time worrying about it.

There is a difference between art and someone making a forum post begging for people to code their mod and do their models/maps for them, all according to their grand design, because such tasks are below them, apparently.

Whether there will be another incarnation of anything related to Ion Storm – LOL, yeah well, need I really answer that + frankly I have no idea weather I’d qualify (everyone flame Warren Spector ). Yeah, everyone should push to get the source of Deus Ex into the public domain, but you all know Eidos + those guys who “saved them” from going under: <source mine, source safe in vault never to be opened again, source, my precious…>

Have I met you Wouter, would love too! You’re at Guildhall right? We should probably start the Dallas Illuminati or something, you know, the open source wing of the Dallas game mafia ;)

Well, swervez, the truth is, if you can’t be critical about someone’s questionable work how is it really helping them? Again, take this thojoh370 guy, would the reaction have been different if he added a link to some screenshot depicting some repulsive scene, only then asking to rip the content? I don’t think so, and to be honest, I’m yet to see one mod coming from the sauer/cube community matching the initial level of quality brought out by these two original games…

The reason most of the mods fail is they're based on the premise that they can do things a lot better than we did. They underestimate the amount of work it took just to make a game as "simple" as Sauer is.

The only STANDALONE mod so far that has been half-decent (somewhat) was Death Illustrated, that at least was made with alot of effort, especially the frontend.

It seems that add-on mods for Cube/Sauerbraten are the most impressive really.. pCube etc..

No need to worry aardappel, its just another attempted MMORPG mod..

http://tpj.productions.googlepages.com/

They already have instructions on how to download the 'Sauerbraten Engine' so that their game can run.

"If we see any player with an unregistered name we've got to ban that player or otherwise let anyone at him. Unwanted players will always be unwanted."

Must be a GREAT community then! *sarcasm*

great, there goes another one. MMORPG, no programmers, no content, but a fancy website. Sounds familiar.

Maybe I should create a standard "cease and decist" email template: "Hi. I see you are creating a MMORPG based on my game. You haven't read the documentation at all, have you? ..."

People have awful habits in not contacting the creator about modding anything. Even though they mention your name (at the very bottom of the page) they want to take credit. Idiots... >.>

That would be like sending a cease and desist to someone trying to build a death ray on the moon. :)

It is addon, just so sad that its ANOTHER attempt at a MMORPG. Simply using the search function on the forums and he would see HOW many people have come up with an idea like his before.
