Editing Maps with another program?

by Avalos on 05/15/2006 22:03, 14 messages, last message: 05/18/2006 03:35, 3097 views, last view: 04/25/2024 15:40

It is possible to edit a map or to be exported in another format like b3d, 3ds or max? with textureS? I am using to realmcrafter and I would like to use the maps of Cube and Sauerbraten

You can export level geometry to .obj.

If you want to use the maps of cube and sauerbraten make sure you have the permission of the authors to do so.

I had a weird idea once, to export all the main Sauerbraten maps to .obj, then convert them to .md2 and map a map selection room, with all the maps (much smaller of course) floating in a selection room, all of them triggers to the full map. Then I remembered I would have to texture the models, so I dumped the idea.

One more thing Avalos, you can EXPORT to .obj, but you cannot convert it back from .obj to .ogz.

I cannot imagine why you would want to do this anyway...everything you could do, and more, is already in Sauerbraten.

That's foolish talk right there.

"I can't imagine why you would want to do this anyway..."

This is one of my pet peeves. Why should your lack of imagination limit what I can do? What if he wants to do it for pure hack value? Note that all of this applies to that phrase in general, not in this place specifically.

No offense to you personally, kurt. You are one of the biggest supporters of the sauer community :)

sauerbraten already has an excellent in-game map editor.

this was implemented to stop from having to download a seperate peice of software to make a map, why should we go back to using a separaate peice of software? :S

Of course it does. As cube before it did. It is kind of silly to have seperate proggrams for editing like that, especially if it's a format that no other program uses. I wasn't argue about this case, or against kurt, who is a most excellant person, as are you, cc_machine, but against the general principle.

One of the main reasons Aard started Cube, and later Sauerbraten, is because of this "in-game editor" feature. I wouldn't ever expect him to change this, just so people could load the maps in an external program...it just wouldn't make sense when considering what Cube and Sauerbraten are for. You download the Cube/Sauerbraten package, and you have everything you need to make maps, and play the game.

Could you tell me one good thing you could do in an external editor, that I cannot do with just this engine? Don't bother listing things as a comparison to other games, as I'm not interested in that.

I shold mention this too - I do not like the idea of my maps being used in another game. I wouldn't try to stop this...but I do not like it. I really doubt you'll convince Aard to make a feature so you can use Cube or Sauer maps in your game....why should he? :)
