As you all know, we have been silently prototyping the RPG project for a while now, mainly in the form of Levels and design.
Today marks the day of the more official start of the project, with a name, a domain, and something hinting at a game design.
Check out the website: http://eisenstern.com/
Particularly note the design notes linked from that page. If you want to have your say about the direction this RPG is going, or feel that certain features "won't work well", then now is a good time to discuss that, in this thread :)
Just because we have a website doesn't mean that we should start announcing this project everywhere, unlike most people, I don't like advertising thing that I am going to do, I prefer showing what I have done :) But it is good to have a home for the project, because we'll shift a lot of our focus towards it as the FPS is getting more mature.
I will be doing some of the core gamecode for this project soon, so people can start to play around with it.

I intend it to be playable in both 1st and 3rd person... not sure which will be default yet.

Nice. Not that I am looking for such a job, I haven't got the skills, but it's interesting though. Does the usual "pro mapper" work at an office or from home?

I work at the office. Some people also use VPN to work from home, but I'd rather keep home and work seperate.

One thing that i was thinking about was that EVERYTHING would be able to be interactive. You see something on the ground (an object of-course) and you can pick it up, smash it with a weapon, or smash it by stepping on it. Just an idea!

I booted eisenstern from a clean gui release, noticed that if you use "/newrpgspawn mman" in edit mode and then come back into play mode, it hangs. If I save the map and then reload, it works, but if i reload the map in edit mode and then go into play mode, it still hangs.
I'm running windows XP, amd sempron 3400, nvidia 6600. also occurs on my old p4 2.8ghz, ati 9250 also running XP.

I like the idea of an open source RPG :)
I read the eisenstern design notes and i only desagree with the one-type-only-damage... You should use at least 2 types (one for physical damage and other for magical damage)...
I'm a casual programmer and level designer so if U need some help with something(execpt for new textures :P) just ask ;)

Woooh =D
The beta version of Eisenstern included in the GUI release is really a big progress.
The fonctionnality "attack" FINALLY work.
The New GUI is really implicit and easy to use for that kind of game !
Who did the music ?

This has been changed, probably.. The game source is still in development and is only partially functional. If you find bugs, then download CVS and then check there!

only happens if you use it outside of edit mode... fixed in cvs.
It doesn't crash for me (anymore) when placing a spawn and then switching out of edit mode.
The music is by Fanatic and temp.

this might not be the correct place for these questions.
is there any plan for adding texture
export to the "writeobj" function?
i like using sauerbraten to model
much more than conventional 3d packages
and that's be a great feature.
also are there any plans to add collada
anything? maybe "writecollada" for maps?
or using .dae for character models?
i just think ya'll would have more
artistic content donated to this project
with those formats.
eh maybe i'm wrong.

Probably textures wonīt get exported. The writeobj isnīt really supported much.
Collada has been discussed and neglected.

Just buy elder scrolls and be done with it. Let's stop fantasing of live backdrops with nice mapping and textures. ( though the water has already made it into my heart, it looks better compared HL:S and CS:S ). ;/
Now to this RPG part..
Role playing doesn't really tie in with "0Mg d@t nUbbb g0t lik t3h 10oo Xp1!!11!!!!". Games like DX or HL define your role playing as another character, not shooting down a headcrab and a dialouge message popping up declaring an accomplishment "YOU GOT THE MAD FPS SKILLS DOD!! LEVEL UP IN USING WASTING 9mm CLIPS!! DOD!!".
But give the people what they want. ;]
Money, women, big swords and more worms to kill for experience points.
PS is 6 multiplied by 4 32?
Later. ;/

This would be awesome because I can't get Morrowind to work under Wine and I shouldn't support companies who are too lazy to support my OS.
The framerate inside the massive test areas is amazing but it will drop once NPC's and rpg character stats are added.
I have an idea for the sword usage: The direction of swinging the mouse will dictate the way that the sword moves, and not moving the mouse while attacking will just make the sword or weapon poke at the enemy instead of slash. This would be better than the sword system of Morrowind and Oblivion, IMO.
Is there any chance of using .mod instead of .mdi music in the rpg maps? because .mdi doesn't play well in Linux.

There will be no leveling up in Eisenstern. So, you don't have to worry about that.
