Hi,
Recompiling the 2005_08_28 sources (on both linux and win32 btw.) yields \"Incompatible Client Protocol\" when trying to connect to public servers - how come ?

Happens on purpose. The network code in the source is diffrent from the one in the official binarys - cheat protection.

There is a nice readme that tells you that self-compiled binaries use a different net protocol.

yes, but you'd have to take the distributed binary (not the source), decompile it, change what you wanted and then recompile (i think)

Regardless, IANA, but there's no problem with building and using your own sauerbraten binaries online as long as the source is unmodified.
