Sauerbraten Epic Novel?

by bootist on 03/21/2006 08:29, 16 messages, last message: 03/26/2006 09:36, 3034 views, last view: 05/05/2024 09:47

ha. I was going to start this thread asking "how can i contribute?" but luckily I was warned against it. Anyway, I want to do something Sauerbraten-based that isn't too technical. I've come to learn I have no patience for trying something new.

Even typing a "-f " on a bat file is big deal for me. I want to learn coding and I want to map, yet I don't have enough motivation to do either, even when I think my ideas could be successful.

I think, though, I could do sauerbraten-based writing and stick to it. Possibly an novel, maybe some short stories. Would this be conflicting with any copyrights?

(BTW, I already know that I'm insane, so don't even mention it.)

"OMG I ACTUALLY POSTED IT!"

That was stated the second I saw the published thread.

What was i thinking?

I actually have an answer. Now, when you search for "epic novel" in the forums you get a result.I'm pretty sure this is a first for a gaming forum.

I should do a study.

(Or maybe I should blog. Thoughts?)

I wonder what you could possibly write on Sauerbraten.. it is hardly inspirational for epic novels..

It's a pretty fertile ground for slash-fiction, actually.

To me, it's obvious they're violence toward one another is to distract us from they're actual, looked-down-upon activities.

This isn't a game, it's social commentary.

heheh, just make sure there are no continuity errors. There's nothing fans hate worse.

For example, consider the existing back story for my extremely popular (I think at least 3 people have played it) map, Temple Mount:

I was thinking the story line for Sauer would be "You kill even more stuff. The End."

Also, bootist, I think you're confused about what slash-fiction means. Oh god I hope you are.

#8: Firefly needs slash

I'm very surprised at how active this thread is. There's plot spoilers and everything!

Slash-fiction for Sauer might one day see the light. Who knows? To me, if someone made slash for Sauer that would be an amazing compliment (on the developers).

This is a completely personal opinion (of course), but when someone likes something enough that they could release fiction about it, espcially fiction promoting an unpopular sexual preference, and expect other people to enjoy it, too, I think that's a sign of how successful the source matrial is.

If you ignore the (gaping) holes in my argument and instead focus on my incorrect sentece structure, you might come to see what I'm saying.

If not, please ignore me on this thread, Pushplay, and pay attention on the Map Editing thread, where I think i wrote something that might (debateably) have some value.

In fact, I'll rewrite a part of it here:

"Are there any mappers willing to do live, map-editing exhibitions?" I say this because now Sauer has a Spectator mode and it would be great to see some seasoned mappers (like yourself) show us a thing or two. I know you already wrote some things, but the recording is nothing like the live performance. It's not a big deal, but I think it would be pretty cool.

Sorry, but.. I don´t think Sauerbraten is a fertile ground for slash fiction..

Let´s see.. Olaf Ogro and Ryan Rhino stop and hide in a dark corner of killfactory to make love, not war (in explicit detail)? O_O

Writing an "epic novel" based on sauerbraten is weird enough, but this is really a little off.

You can´t be serious about that.

For everyone wondering :

#10: The mapping, not the slash!

Of course I wasn\'t serious. It\'s just that when I\'m being ridiculous and it seems that i\'m taken serious...even a little...I always feel that the joke must be continued. In post #8, though, it started as bullshit but turned into something I kind of believed in.

I guess I should point out that I\'ve never written slash fiction and I\'ve never considered writing it. I did read one piece, but that\'s only because it exists. It was based on the Arrested Development TV show.

Anyway, how about the mapping idea? I thought that it was an interesting idea when I posted it on the other thread, but I still haven\'t got a response. It might not be that cool, but i figured someone can at least tell me how uncool it is, right? I think this is a pretty fair trade off for not letting me get in your bed, makkE.

And now because someone has to say it: Roy Orbison wrapped in clingfilm.

#13: Epic?

by tentus on 03/23/2006 04:11

Epic as in Lord of the Rings, or possibly Bone (a recent addiction of mine), or epic as in... I dunno, something less ambitious? I've thought before about how cool storytelling in Cube would be, but the limits of demo made that next to impossible, so I never could get my rough drafts to work.

But a unified storyline would be nice. I like the idea of having a rough system to help people set up mini-episodes.

I've always felt that Sauer was better suited to something a wee bit absurd. My storyline involved a young apprentice Ogro spilling beer on a Steampunkesque interdimensional tachyonometer and it causing a rift that tore the local space-time continuum to bits. He's then spun out into a fractal world of mashed up dimensions where he must find the parts to rebuild the doodad and mend the dimensional rifts. Preferably before his boss gets back and kicks his ass for drinking on the job.
