I think putting in some simple checks to prevent mapfaking would be worth it. Messing up the map a little is so easy i would bother to do it for such a small game if i was the cheating type. But i couldn't be arsed to reverse engineer code etc to make hacks.

what stands in the way of map faking protection and coop is, that you want cheaters to be autmatically kicked.
if any client sends a checksum of the map on entering the game, the server compares them, and if any one does not match, _all_ players should be flagged (italics, colours). players can guess at the cheater (the last one entering) and discuss.
how to reset the flag? the server may recompare sums on someone leaving the game. there may be a /compare command, which might be useful in coop to check if all players are in sync; this only works if the same map always gives the same sum. I know too little about the workings of coop to say if there is a need for this.

controversly i would suggest that no more efforts should be made to prevent cheating.
Cheaters as a whole treat cheating as a challenge, to the majority of cheaters there is no joy in cheating if they dont even need to put effort into cheating.
like I said, it's controversial but I believe it's true.

i saw someone cheat the other day, but my 400ms ping pwned him. when he would coma above ground, he could kill me but my computer would find out for a second or so so i could always get him.. was kinda cool i managed to get about 3kills to his 1.
cheats dont always do well, he left within long.
piglets idea is good, but even if you just logged the checksum on the server, that would be good. we also need to be able to ban people from servers, ive come accross a few total dicks (esp when co-op)

yeah, or a vote for kick system. It would be depressing to KNOW that you're playing with a cheater when the only thing you can do about it is quit in disgust.

I've experienced something that I never have before last night. While playing a game for around 15 minutes my opponant suddenly disconnected with the error (in white letters) 'Player XXX has been kicked from the server for a modified client' or something along that line.

Yeah, that can happen from time to time. I don't know why, but I've seen it myself! It's wierd..
Then I must oppose this crazy idea about a vote kick system. What if someone is really good, and the other players desides that they want to get rid of him.. Or vice versa..
Okay, it would be a good idea.. if the maps for example was checksumed, and compared.. and if it mismatched.. that player would be flagged as "voteable".. So the rest of the players could vote him away. Or something? But no plain voting.. that'd be madness.

Vote kicking has never been a problem in my experience, and i've played lots of games that has it; the quakes, CS, RTCW etc etc. The only time i was kicked because of it was when i was teamkilling because i hadn't played in a loooong time and couldn't tell what team i was on :P

Humm, I played for about 10 minutes that night and then my computer locked up (on the display side anyway), wonder if a lockup could cause that.
I was thinking about cheating while playing and noticed it might be easy to think someone is when they're not. Players basically just appear at spawn and disappear at death, lag can cause popping around and allow players to simultaneously kill each other.
One possibility is just to gang up on cheaters. If the powerups respawned slower, it would be easier to be mean.
I was kicked once in QW because two dicks where practicing their moves for their clan and it took me 2 minutes to figure that out. So I decided to practice myself and they still called me a noob (right, young whippersnappers) and banned me before I could reply -- and the ban was permanent.

I'm not sure, but it wasn't you I was playing with anyway.
It happened again today with another person.
Both times it happened it was on a custom map, if there's a relation.

auto-getmap if player haven't got this map, backup or tempfile if player have the map with non-matching checksum?
anyway, we would need to determine which player'll do an (auto?)sendmap ;)
-which is the right version (the more popular?)
-bandwidth (for some kb's)?
-random?
...but isn't it a bit overkill? ;)

keywords: cheats "be the best" win victory aimbot "god mode" invincible "make money" "lose weight" "unsecured credit card" p0rn "stop spam ;)"
cheat in SP: maybe to visit the maps... so use ffa/default or coop.
cheat in MP: behind your router/masq/ICS/whatever, plug 4-5 PC's, open cube on the same server, you don't even need a monitor for each PC, connect your machine and voila...
they won't move/shoot and you can frag them easily for hours, and you'll get an awesome score you'll be very proud of ;)
...don't forget to take a screenshot and print-it on glossy paper to display on your living-room.

You don't even need 5 PCs or the network. Just launch a server locally, and as many clients as you wish in resolution as low as possible. Happy fragging =)
