Fired up Babelfish .. sounds like a pretty minor advantage that would give (I presume it would work -- I don't think you could add powerups since that requires the server (I sometimes have to slow down at powerups just for them to get picked up at all)). Also would be rather obvious, not that that stopped anyone before. I can't see any reason to use it anyway -- other than to prove you can for a minute -- unless some real competition is atarted, and then the obviousness would definitely be an issue. I'll be watching for people walking through walls in the future, for sure.

Incidently, I played some the other night against people with pings of 30 or even less -- were they actually on or LANed to the server?

No. We play cube because it makes big fun. And if some idiots come and use this shit, there is no more fun in this game.

maybe this could also be helpful in coop editing; both client and server periodically or on demand exchange md5sums of the map files; different sums will write the player names in italics or colored. so players know, when they are synched.

md5sums are a good way of checking that everyone is on the same map, but what if you're coop mapping? Or what if someone just doesn't have that map yet?

Some sort of check summing of the maps seems like a good way to prevent map faking and would be useful for coopediting although i dont no exactly how you would impliment it for the coopediting how would you decide whos version of the map was the valid version if check sums don't match ?

It's a small community. Small enough that we can tar and feather cheaters without needing to automate it. Aard's at a serious advantage over all other fps devs on that one.

true pushplay, and why would you need to check maps on co-op, your not actualy playing the game, so cheats are ineffective... i though that was pretty obvious, but still

it is pretty much impossible to make a game 100% cheat proof, but cube certainly is very bad at it. I made cube for fun, and never thought it would become big enough that cheating was a major issue. Yes I can add things to the next release to detect "mapfaking", but it will just become a ratrace with the cheaters, and I have better things to do with my time.

Apart from mapfaking, I really can't come up with any other idea on how to cheat.

You can take this fight aard! :)

No, Aard's right, the price of defeating cheats is eternal vigilence. That's fine for punkbuster because they get a salary for it, but we can deal with it ourselves.

I agree md5sums would be great. If the game mode is coopedit, simply not check in that game mode.
If they don't have the map then that's a problem.

I think putting in some simple checks to prevent mapfaking would be worth it. Messing up the map a little is so easy i would bother to do it for such a small game if i was the cheating type. But i couldn't be arsed to reverse engineer code etc to make hacks.
