Hi,

here is some free textures to use in your maps.

3 models too so far...

this is a work in progress... feel free to use what ever you want in your maps...

included is a test map.. it is toaly playable, and quite nice looking.

you can copy and paste the textutre names from my mine2.cfg file to your map files, to make the textures and models appear in your map.

great textures stinky taco. do you make them from scratch??

#32: scratch

by stinky taco on 03/03/2006 23:39

Hi Passa!

Yes most of them are from generated noise, and seamless patterns from texturemaker...

the realistic looking ones are from Zbrush 2

some of the bricks are from photos that I have made seamless with texturemaker and my trusty cloner brush in GIMP.

the skybox planets are also from various photos....

the skybox stars are seamlessly generated in texturemaker... the planets are shamlessly cut and pasted from Creative commons photos...

I may replace the photo planets with rendered ones soon...and do some type of sunburst flayer for a nice fake looking sun...

Oh! yea!

the grass and cliff textures are from little photo swatches.... I used texturemakers Macrofeature resampler to make nice seamless tiles... (well the cliff is not verry well tileable because of the color diffrences)

Thanks for the nice comments Passa! have a nice day :)

wow I found the texturemaker site, its great! only problem is im not sure what they say by non-commercial use, does that mean I have to order it to make textures for sauerbraten?

#34: texturemaker...

by stinky taco on 03/03/2006 23:55

yea,

I think Tobias wants people to buy it before creating textrues wit it for distrabution.

I dont think he cares if you use for your own personel maps and stuff...

think the demo makes watermarked textures, and you are limited to 256x256 export...

I may be wrong about all this, I have not seen the demo in 3 years now... I bought texturemaker back in the days when it was called Infinity texture... istill call it I-tex sometimes by accident...

it is between 70-100$ dollars if I ma not mistaken... but well worth every cent if you intend on makeing seamless stuff for anything...

it comes with lots of cool little tools, like the first day engine... it is like terragen that you can use to render cubemaps for your skyboxes ( I have not gotten the cubemaps to work in sauerbraten yet...)

the advanced shader is a cool emboss tool, that allows 2 lights, plus nice shadow controls...

after you are all done making your heightmaps for textures it has a plugin that makes a normal map for you, so you get realistic bumps in next generation games like Doom 3, Quake 4, FEAR, Etc .... etc... etc...

lots of open source game engines use DOT3 normal maps too... OGRE, Irrlicht, Crystalspace, Reality factory, genisys, and nebula device...

i see it is even in the Sauerbraten TODO.txt list :p !!!

anyways... I try useing as much free software as possible, so i can share with others...

Sometimes I cheet tho, and use Zbrush and texturemaker... it saves lots of time, and makes me look Sooooooooo Goood! :)

you can make 3d rendered textures too with Blender or wings 3d....

with both you can even render with POVRAY or YAFRAY (my favorite) for realistic caustics... and nice soft shadows...

If you use blender internal, you can render TOON stuff, for cartoon looking maps :p

but alas... if you buy Zbrush it is 1000% faster. you get to use 2d and 3d tools at teh same time... plus a raytracer for shadows....

thanks for the info. also though, isnt the BETA 3.something version free for non-commercial use with no watermarks?

#37: ??

by stinky taco on 03/04/2006 17:31

Passa why not just download it and witness it yourself :p

BTW,

If you have windows there is a neat free way to make a normal map with GIMP

get the plugin here:

http://nifelheim.dyndns.org/~cocidius/normalmap/

It really rocks...

Photoshop has a free plugin from Nvidia for normal maps too...

but GIMP is much faster 8) I would say about 200% faster to render your normal map...

PLUS! the GIMP plugin has a 3d preview mode so you can proof your textures on a sphere,Teapot, cube , plane, and a couple other meshes... lets you even tweak the light direction and COLORS!!! verry good plugin....

but alas... no Linux version... (sorry) or OSX (Ha ha!)...

by stinky taco on 03/05/2006 02:29

Well if whatever photoshop PS2 is renders models with dot 3 bumpmaps/normal maps on them,
then yes...
the normal maps that Gimp produces should be compatible with it...

If you are asking if this GIMP plugin works with photoshop the awnser is

#$*&ing no way... gimp script Fu is incompatible with adobe products...

along with GIMP filters... they dont work with photoshop either..

#41: nvidia

by stinky taco on 03/05/2006 02:32

sorry..
pressed enter too soon...

If you use adobe products, there is an Nvidia filter plugin for you for FREE..

although, as I mentioned before... the GIMP one RULEZ it....

ha ha!

Have a nice day

Just my humble opinion (or call it constructive criticism):

The fog is too much imho.
Many of the textures are still overbright.(especially the light trims)
The z-brushed trim textures still have hard seams. (so have the zbrushed bricks, those have also 2 shadows that look like accitental brush strokes.)
Also the zbrush only stuff has 2 much depth imho, especially compared to the other stuff.
Lightning could have been much more intresting, where have all the shadows from the moonlight gone?
Those jumppads are too high. Just doesn´t feel right.
The rivets look like plastic, and are too big. On the skull texture they fight for space with the skull.
That light textures on the pillar like objects don´t work. Ever seen a lamp wrap around a corner like that? Even with the sci-fi theme that´s pretty weird, makes the 2d nature too obvious.

That one place with the four dragons in a row.. why would you make such a "highlight" texture and kill it by dull repetition?

It´s gonna work somehow, but it all has a little rushed and sloppy taste.

Btw, the map needs a /remip

Thanks passa,

I highly doubt it will be included in any release... it is just to test out the textures.

I have fixed some of the textures, and have also added Jumppads.

If you would like an exclusive copy to distribute to your favorite server please contact me in #Sauerbraten IRC channel, and I will give it to you , and anyone else who appreciates it.

makkE ,

your comments are anything but humble...

but I appreciate the personel opinions you have expressed nonetheless...
thank you for takeing time and looking at my work, and commenting.

Just because you made it to test the textures out does not mean that the map should not be included with the next release.

I think that any good user created maps should be included as there are still 'test' maps in the menu.

The problem is that just to include this map we'd have to include 5 MB of new textures. That is not likely.
