Developing a unique game

by jhocking on 05/31/2002 22:38, 3 messages, last message: 06/02/2002 02:06, 1103 views, last view: 04/30/2024 07:55

Having just discovered cube, I must say the demo game impresses me very much! The fast rendering and bright, saturated colors are exactly what I've been looking for to use in my projects.

I'ld like to get started developing content with/for cube. However, the documentation is minimal at best, so I have several questions:

1) How do I go about creating animated models for cube? I don't need the low-level details; I know how to model, texture, and animate low-pol 3D characters. But how do I then get them into cube?

2) How do I program for cube? I would like to/need to create behaviors for enemies, script level progression, etc.

3) Is a first-person shooter the only type of game possible with cube?

Thanks for any help!

You should view the "Single Player Episode" thread. We're just working on content for/with cube. Read that and check out: http://www.adletecgames.dd.vu ; if you'd like to, you could join us..

Hi Joe, cool that you have discovered Cube =)

1) Here is information about the .md2 model format which we use for Cube atm:
http://www.ugrad.cs.jhu.edu/~dansch/md2/

if u want to test how an model looks in cube, replace one of the existing models.(i hope i could have helped, you can contact wouter@fov120.com for more information, especially when u want to do the weapon"hud" models, as these would need extra code to show up)

2)Cube is not Open Source, but Aardappel did a little script(cfg) language, which i use for levelscripts (triggers/values in maps), he can give you more information about enemy/ai stuff -and what is needed/what is possible.

3)With the script language u can make some sort of text adventure (also has some math operators which will do fine for simple rpg elements), but, seriously, cube engine is mainly an first-person shooter :)

It says that the Maximum number of triangles is 4096, is this per every frame or per model?

I'm Guessing per frame rendered in game, 4096 seems a bit excessive for a single real-time model.

I just wanted to make sure.
