I'm gonna be upgrading soon also. What SFX do you guys think I should change in matter in making Cube feel more of a strong FPS then before?

Why didn´t you just zip only those up that are actually changed?
You should package them in
/packages/sounds/.. ..
so it just has to be unzipped to /cube.

And get those q1 and rainbow6 sounds out of it. That´s simply stealing. You´re furthermore encouraging it by saying:

*Can be used with both Cube and Sauerbraten*

" I got no copyright on them. Do as you please."

That´s like:

"that your car?" "no, steal it if you like" ..

If you want it to be serious, make sure you´re only using material that is free to use and free to re-distribute.

And how about cropping them correctly, so they will start playing when the event actually happens?

Cube is a freeware game. Sounds from Quake 1 doesn't matter. No copyright law says that using sounds from their game for non-profit is a violation. I will package the folders next time that need changing by themselves, but I will choose SFX that I think that suits the game best. If you don't like it that is your problem. Other people will think other wise.

It clearly IS illegal to redistribute original q1 content in any way. They gpl´ed the source code, but not the content. The fact you don´t make any profit just saves you from being sued.

It doesn't saved you from being sued at all. You can easily argue if someone is redistributing your content for free, they are depriving you of monetary gains that would be made by distributing the content at market value.

This is exactly what is argued in the case of illegal music/movie/software trading as is. Just because you are redistributing it for free, does not mean someone isn't losing money because of it. And as far as legal precedent in actual cases goes, the judges agree with the content owner.

Bottom line is, what you are doing is illegal, and you CAN be sued regardless of what you think.

For a game that was released when I was a small child? Really? The quake source code was released years ago and your telling me I can get sued for an old old old old game? The new Quake games don't even use the old Quake sounds much. The hell are you talking about?

all eihrul and makkE are doing is trying to stop u from getting sued. it IS illegal and you can be sued.

its like cube using all the Q2 weapon models and textures. is that fair?

you can get sued for ANYTHING that is copyright. it dont matter how old it is. money is still made from these games because you can buy those re-released $10 bargain versions. you think a judge will care if the game is "old"?? (1997? how is that old?)

anyway here are some places to get free sounds for games. i've used these sources for my work with retribution and a half started mod for cube. some of cubes original sounds come from the first source (i'm pretty sure).

i do a bit of my own sound processing to the free sounds, add a bit of verb, normalize, trim, etc...try to have all the sounds work together (same volume/eq curve).

this way you can add a bit of your "own sound", and of course always give credit to the original author in a readme.

Ok. I apologize for what I tried to do. No disrespect. I love Quake and I had to ask my friend on his input. I was wrong. Not the first time I was ever wrong.

I just found it disrespectful that you change my name to silentfoxfuck. No site does that. When I mod the SFX I will go and be original. But it will take a hell lot more longer since making things these days original is tough as hell.

I will be releasing it again but this time with original SFX and free stuff off the web.

And I will say again that I apologize, but I want respect like everyone deserves. Thank you.

Anyway, back to buisness.

So far I've changed the shotgun sound. Found a perfect SFX for it but I had to make it louder since when I got it, was alittle dim.

I also changded the boing_x sound. Now it sounds more mature. And about the land sound effect. Even though I cropped it in Audition, it won't sync. Very strange. Does anybody have any suggestions why it doesn't sync?

You don´t have to be all original in that sense.. if you like the quake armour sound, noone would mind if you created something similar :)

some more great sounds can be found on SFX sampling CD's that us "old-timers" use to load up our hardware samplers. many can be bought real cheap at music stores. looping collections are good also, those used for ACID PRO (sonic foundry/sony) have a large library to choose from. old keyboard/synth's are also good sources.

Have to be careful with buying sounds though- some demand you to disguise them inside your application, wich would not be the case with cube.
