Jumping maps... any interest?

by SimMarine on 02/04/2006 22:10, 3 messages, last message: 02/08/2006 03:20, 1086 views, last view: 05/01/2024 07:13

I started up a project about seven to eight months ago, and started to work on a map purely based on jumping. I saw the maps on CS, and I found them real interesting. It seemed boring at first, but I really enjoyed them.

Well, since I was a lazy person, I put off the project for several months. A few days ago, I finished my map. It isn't exactly all that great as far as cosmetics go (I'm a terrible person at lighting, and I'm not exactly the best at making pretty structures). This was more of a test, to see how a jump map would fare in Cube. I personally really like the idea, and if anyone's interested, I could upload the map.

This is different from makkE's Tricky Pit map. My map consists of a lot more jumps, rather than a small number. The majority of my jumps are linear, which only require foward moving(infact, I discourage strafejumping, since it would make it too easy). A smaller number of the jumps require you to turn around pillars and walls, even as far as going 180 degrees for some.

A similar idea could be done (and probably much better) for Sauerbraten. So, if anyone wants to team up, we could possibly make a neat jump map for Cube/Sauerbraten (though I want to avoid Sauerbraten until its jumping physics are corrected). If not, I want to at least generate interest for others to make a jumping map or two.

one problem: coopedit doesn't work in sauerbraten yet.

but isnt he saying to make it in cube? cube has coopedit. plus the map could just be converted later when sauer's physics are fixed. although im not sure how much intrest this would generate. i too have tried jump maps in CS and they are just frustrating... especially when you fall when you are REALLY close to the top. (but hey, you are hearing this from someone who buys weapons on CS with the mouse and only the other day realised what a deagle was. actually it was today that my CS nut friend told me what a USP was.)

My friend and I are doing a second map in Cube. We'll probably go Sauerbraten once the physics are corrected and Co-op editing is implemented.

Oh, and it seems most jumping maps in CS were designed so that you had to have a certain plug-in for the server. It could basically save where you were at, and you could re-appear there whenever you fell, which made it a lot easier.

Several other maps (I'm assuming before the plug-in existed, though I have no knowledge on the history of the kz maps) were split into "sections", which had you complete ten or so jumps, then you were at another section. When you would fall, it wasn't bad, as you were simply limited to that section. That's what I'm doing on Cube, so if you mess up, you only have to re-do some of the jumps again.
