Coders for Sauerbraten MOD

We from Clan Hyper-Frag (http://hyper-frag.de.vu) are currently working on a MOD for the sauerbraten engine.
There are already a lot of new functions to enhance the gamers experience to that of the original game.
For example :
- we integrated german "Umlaute"
for display (e.g. chat)
- modified the protocol to allow for
maxPlayers & timeLeft to be seen in
server browser
- added the possibility to change your
player Model
- incorporated country flags,
which might be supplemented by
"Clan-Flags" later on in development.

We could do with some help, though! :)

To be honest, the clan site is completely german, but as you might have noticed - english is not an issue ;-)

i belive someone on this forum introduced me to this site. very funny stuff, and amusingly accurate.

I'm startng to think that we need to start sharing our code efforts in the "Mods" section of Quadropolis. With relatively little effort we could make a small library of ways to effectively mod the cube and sauer engines, to add things like my logo or Sparr's pushers. Wait, is the pusher code already in the scripts section?

Either way, it sounds like code that most of us could appreciate.

anyways....

wasdaplus doesn't intend to update his EDM source code with the latest sauer code.

which i understand is heavily refactored using alot more classes, and cleaner organization of the code.

so......

if this project intends to be coded in such a way as to easily modify any newer official versions of sauer, then
that would be a CRUCIAL factor to potential coders on whether to join THIS mod or join the EDM mod.

also i think EDM is more focused on new weapons and other gameplay enhancements. so far this mod sounds like its more about general enhancements to the engine or interface.

would like to know more about features of this mod and intended scope of changes.

So far we ar _focusing_ on general enhancements, but have plans for more weapons and game-modes in the pipeline (e.g. CTF, Domination and a grenade launcher (Q2 style)).

My plan is to keep working on "ideas" and toying with the code of the original releases (sometimes even from CVS) till the FPS-game has been finished. Officially.

Then we would incorporate all our "good stuff" into that source code.

We do not intend to keep the game compatible with the original sauerbraten though - since some of our changes already meddle with the protocol this might even be impossible.
Currently I at least suspect it to be very complicated and so have no plans to go out of my way to achieve it.

MOD, attachments, sounds, and models

Everyone has been talking about the features for sauerbraten and online play. One thing we could do for the health damage and health bar ideas is there could be a health bar/number selection menu. It would come up after you made you have made your game mode choice a menu would come up and you could choose the health bar type (it would look like this).

Then once you pick a health type you there would be a box that would come up and you could enter the amount of health allowed ranging form 1-300. Then you could choose your level, or it could be that the health menu would appear last which ever. But in single play the menu would be after you choose the map. Another thing I heard with the mention of names above the players head. I think that would be awesome, mainly because if you are trying to help someone out u need to now who is who in the game and going by that slight color tint ain’t all the helpful.

I agree with the point I heard earlier that RL and MG is pointless. Instead we should have a sort of animation for when the ammo respawns. I have the idea of, the ammo would start at about 10-20 feet above the spawn point in the level of that particular ammo. Once the ammo started to respawn it would grow form nothing and fade in while either pulsing or flashing, while dropping in from the starting spawn point and rotating. Except when the ceiling is low, if the ceiling was low either the animation would speed up (now I don’t mean speed up as in everything I just mean it would come down, grow and fade in a bit faster), or it could just be there depending of the height of the ceiling. If the ceiling is right above the ammo entity it would just appear there, but is the ammo entity doesn’t have a ceiling right above it the animation would just speed up.

I also saw a Capture The Flag MOD for cube on Quadorpolios’ website, the only down fall is that you have to download an older version of cube to play the MOD. If that could be fixed up for Sauer it would bring loads of people to play Sauer, I mean tons. That is the reason all of my friends don’t play it. And for other reasons such as no people are on the servers, I mean hardly any.

Another thing I saw once was a bot MOD for Cube. It was on Quadorpolios’ website of all the MODs. I was wondering if that would be implemented for Sauer, it could be used for MP and SP game modes. There could be simple AI code rendering to fix it to be used online (I am not sure if the author has a copyright on it or anything like that). If there is no copyright the is one note I would like to make that it is note totally ready for online play in it self, when you try the bot mode on Cube you can’t play online with the mode. That is a big thing to fix, other than that there would have to be some kid of AI code for the team switching in Teamplay mode (which I have heard doesn’t quite work). I have an idea for the code it could be something just to tell the bot which team to join by a judgment of the amount of the Team members on each team, the amount of flags each team has got(if Capture The Flag is implemented), and the amount of frags each team got. Like lets say RED team has 3 players and 5 points, yet BLUE team has 2 players and 3 points, the bots would distribute so that there would be 4bots on BLUE team and 1 on red team. If the teams scores became dramatically unfair, like lets say RED team has 30 points and BLUE team has 12 a bot or two would switch from RED to BLUE. Another thing would be at the bringing of the match the bots would evenly distribute in the teams until things that were mentioned start to come into effect, but if there are already even teams before the bots start to switch over to there teams one of the 5 bots would just go away and be idle (not visible and not play), once again until one or many of the things above that were mentioned come into effect. Or there could be commands for the master of the server to use to tell the bots like what to do. By what to do I mean like to go from team to team and to be idle or play. One other thing there would be no more then 1-5 bots per server, this way people like me who use dialup don’t get to bogged down.

One more thing on the agenda, is the issue of sounds. In my opinion the sounds sound be changed for health, like if you have a certain health you have a certain sound for pain, and for pain of each projectile. Sounds also need to be different for when items respawn, such as weapons, health, armor, and quad. Like a different sound for each weapon respawn, and other things. There also should be a sound when players and monsters spawn. Another thing that would be cool to have would be that there is a announcer for the game , i could do that, he could say like if there was a kill the announcer would say like “boom shocka” , or “wasted”. Or “blew him away”, or “ boom head shoot”, or good shot” or “what a goner”, or even “ never saw ya”, and even “destroyed” and other things of this nature. There is also the issue of skins and spawning. When spawning there should be a sort of animation, like a flash or like an animation of a Star-Trek teleport, or something like that. Also we need interchangeable skins, like the ones that the monsters have. While on the issue of skins and what not, how about pain skins and reactions, things like you are playing, and get shot you would like slow down, your aim should be out of alignment, your vision on the computer should get blurry or bloody, even have it so the controls screw up once in a while. Now the skins, will be cool to work with. So lets say you are playing in normal mode with out any numbers or whatever, and you shoot someone other then the animations that are on Sauer now how else can you tell if you shoot them. Well how about if you shoot them the arm getting blown off or their head of leg, or a scratch, of a lot of cut and bruises (note: I can get the skin for the cuts and bruises but I would have to have someone else do other programming). But all of this would be determined by the amount of health left.

P.S.
There should also be a Star-Trek animation when you teleport. We also need vehicles, or something like that (vehicles with guns mounted on them).

uh, ok lemme just say that vehicles are not possible at the moment. just like peoples have said, turrets dont even work let alone a car WITH turret on top. and the guy who made the bots for cube said you cant just 'copy' the code from cube to sauer and get it working.

i really dont have a clear idea about your plans for forking or keeping current with official sauer release, but it would take too many words and quotes to illustrate why i dont feel my questions have been answered.

but thanks for answering anyways. 8)

i guess i will try to head up my own version of Sauer, since i tend to not be compatible with most peoples visions/directions.

i want mine to slowly incorporate new major features and make my own game out of it, but at the same time be able to operate as an enhanced Sauer client that is able to play on official Sauer release servers.

hopefully when i start getting work done on it you could donate some of your general enhancement code and vice versa so we could help each other while keeping our own seperate directions.

same with EDM, and any other active mods.

good idea, sounds sweet lol

and of course, as in star trek you can't be shot while you have the animation on you.

and which series of star trek? there are different sounds for the original, next generation and voyager i think.
