Cube & Cube 2 FORUM

Great Northern War Mod

by Zealot87 on 11/05/2005 21:09, 3 messages, last message: 11/06/2005 10:14, 1760 views, last view: 05/02/2024 15:12

My friend and I are inspired by this game and an old idea we have always had about creating a mod for the great northern war.

The great northern war was a war in the 1600s fought between the Swedes, the Russians, the Polish, and other smaller parties. The weapons involved some very slight use of melee weapons but more so involved musketry.

A long time ago there was a mod for Half-Life that involved the american war for independence, and it was loads of fun! So I was hoping we could create similar fun here!

Right now, we need some people who would skin and model as well as coders.

If your interested at all, email me, Ill start a forum for interested individuals and we can begin work!

Ok this is exciting! thanks for your time!

Hey Jake, this is a small community. The few people that can create content and code are all (afaik) already envolved in their own projects, or helping the developement of Sauerbraten (wich you should use anyways, rather than cube).

An idea alone won´t get many people aboard, so I strongly recommend you two learn to do some code/art yourselves. If you can come up with a good start, people might get excited about it and be willing to join.

Don´t get me wrong, but this forum has seen about 100 "mod idea" threads like yours already. The few mods that have actually gotten somewhere (like CL and DI (partially)) Had a lot of starting work already done by their initiators before asking for help.

I can offer advice on modelling/maps/skinning, and providing links to tutorials, etc, but you will have to do the majority of the initial work yourself, if you are really serious about making a mod.

To model on linux, you can use blender, or
you might try this program:

I´d suggest blender, because it has a great uv-mapping toolset. Just the md2 exporter is a little bad.. look here

To learn modelling, do some tutorials for the app you use, and look at other peoples models.

For making skins there´s gimp of course.
tutorials on skinning:

some good theoretical tutorials:
http://www.poopinmymouth.com/tutorial/tutorial.htm
other stuff:

Can´t help you with coding, you might want to google "c++ tutorial" or something and read the source code.
