good "free media" sources? |

as most of you are aware, cube is build up from stuff I created myself, or by friends, or available "free for non commercial use" on the net. One particular item that is VERY hard to come by is good sounds, in particular pain & death sounds. Sofar I could get by with my own gruntings, but now with the added monsters, the lack of good sounds is really becoming more urgent.
And remember when you suggest something, it has to be "free for non-commercial use", i.e. fully legal. Sounds ripped from some old game won't do.
Oh, another media type which is problematic is monster models. If anyone as any hints here, please let me know.

I have a CD that has about 2000 sounds on it. I'll check to see if there are any that may work. They can be used license free.
What about the Md2's that are being used for JDoom? Also, since the Quake sources have been released, could you use them? Since Cube is non-commercial, you might be able to. One other thought would be to email John Romero (www.johnromero.com). He is very pro-community and might be willing to share some of his stuff or direct you to some resources.

This is funny, we talked about Romero yesterday in #cube.
John Romero should grunt better than Aard, which is hard. :)

the jdoom ones are for doom monsters, and as such not really good (I don't think its cool to have cube SP have doom monsters that behave differently). Also I don't believe these models are 100% legal (merely "tolerated" by id software).
quake "source" which has been released is for the engine, which is the last thing cube needs (it has its own engine) and is also released under the GPL which is very restrictive. Quake media is still copyrighted.
I am not sure what romero could do.. he seems into all these 2d games nowadays. Yeah I bet he could grunt like hell ;)

This place:
http://planethalflife.com/studiosound/
Has a bunch of sound artists that will do custom sounds for free if the project is free, like Cube. Might be worth a look.

polycount is where all the player/monster models already come from.
That audio site sounds cool.. I submitted a request for pain/death grunts, now lets see what happens :)

The sources of doom and quake are now free (GPL), but not the game data. So you can't use them, sadly.

The Doom 2 retexturing project is recreating all the textures from Doom 2 in a higher resolution, and from scratch. That makes it all nice and legal. It would be cool to have all of those textures available, and I think the project leader might be kind enough to share.

There is a project to make new 24-bit Doom textures:
http://switch.to/doom2textures
These are new textures, not versions of the old ones, so there isn't any copyright violation.
Maybe they would allow the use in Cube. This may make Doom Tournament a little more Doom-like. :)
