I spent a while trying to get a dedicated cube server running on a Debian Linux box with no success. Apparently SDL wants an X session.
How difficult would it be to write a slim server-only version of cube that does not depend on SDL - or hardly anything for that matter? I reboot my desktop machine quite a bit and would like to use my current server box to host a cube server on my network.

Yep - as Aard says, no X is needed on the server.
Can you elaborate on what you did? I run a server on a remote headless system with ssh access - and its running fine.
You can email me direct if you like - perhaps we can work through it together?

Easy, just use the "slim server-only version of cube that does not depend on SDL - or hardly anything for that matter".
HOW?
cd to where you installed cube (cd /usr/local/games/cube) and start the ultra -slim server binary (screen -S cube ./bin_unix/linux_server ).
