Sound Lag

I have a 3-5 second sound lag during gameplay. I have tried to tweek soundbufferlen to various settings but that doesnt seem to help.
Does anyone know how to fix the sound lag.

I'm running FC2 with xp2800+ 1 gig ddr ram ,FX6600GT vid card.

could you elaborate?

btw. cube doesn't run at all in fc4 but crashes with SDL parachute deployed....
