Cube Engine, Good Practise for starters!

by mukkan on 09/21/2005 23:51, 7 messages, last message: 09/25/2005 22:24, 1904 views, last view: 04/19/2024 16:55

I am very intrested in game programming and many of you know that I started a Cube mod a few weeks ago. Well. I am still working on it and it's looking very good. I have changed so many aspects of the game that the game play is almost completely diffrent. At the moment I am working on a nice physics system.

Cube is a great game engine, it's free and open source and quite frankly I wonder why more people havent based their games on this engine.

The best thing is it's not only great, but it's simple too (to some extent).

I want to learn this engine inside out, so that I am capable of doing anything with it that I want.

At first when I downloaded the source to this engine I knew nothing about it or how any of it worked, but now I have spent more time with it I have a better understanding of it. Now I would like to learn more.

What I would like to see is a developer tutorial to explain the source code so developers can just "jump in".

The main thing is, there's a lot of files and I don't know where the fuck to find some things. I have found things in the source in the past from using search on strings that appear about 30 odd times in the source. So it wasnt easy.

What I would like to know however, is how does to MD2 loading system work, if some one could point me into the direction, as to where the MD2 loading code is exactly then I could have a play around with it.

The main problem for a programmer like me is that, I can't do textures, graphics, sounds and such for shit. Which can be a pain in the ass at times.

Hi
the md2 stuff in placed in rendermd2.cpp. If you want to learn more about it take a look at http://icculus.org/homepages/phaethon/q3/formats/md2-schoenblum.html

I recommend you to switch to sauerbraten, the 'next-gen cube', it has a huge potential. http://sauerbraten.org

the problem with sauerbraten is that not everything works all the time, and it's hard to keep up with. So much so that i decided to return to the cube engine with my mod, Cube Legends (which is somewhat reinvigorated, btw).

i wish you luck mukkan and hope to see some results soon :)

I would like to start reading (and understanding) the code of Sauerbraten. Are there any tutorials I should have a look at first? (SDL, OpenGL, ...)

#4: i want to learn to program in c++

by darkrocketinc on 09/25/2005 10:43

hello i came in here cause i remember about 2 years ago i was sitting here with an older more crapier computer that i wanted to use as my programming computer. i tried everything to learn programming but the books i bought didnt help at all. not only did they not give enough detail but the specific compilers they told to get didnt even work! so i went and searched and searched and still nothing. i know i may sound like and idiot but do you think you could send me anything that could help me at least understand programming in c++ better than i do now. i have a good understand of it and yes i can do some form of programming but it is soo limited. for example i can only make some kinds of programs that run in only the basic command prompt window. i have some understanding of the way c++ works because i had some people show me how to work with it. i know that in order to make a game work in c++ you need to have classes and functions to make certain things work but the problem is i dont know enough to make them work. do you think you can provide me some tutorials that might work. i have dev c++ and microsoft visual c++ 6.0. i know that no one can just be a great programmer if they just jump into a project that they cant even begin to understand. please help me out ok? oh and if you are wondering about my name thats what i want to put when i make a game. so please help me in the right direction.thank you and i have seem your website i wish i could at least put out something like that.

darkrocketinc: you could try the following tutorial: http://sol.gfxile.net/gp/index.html

You can find other tutorials at: http://www.libsdl.org/tutorials.php

Of all the mainstream languages C++ is probably the toughest. You'd probably get results faster if you learned python or ruby.

RealNitro~i'll check those sites out.thanks for the help.

@pushplay~ i know its a hard language to learn but i think its better to go with what you have a base on then to start something new.
