I already have 2 people doing soundtracks, so there's certainly no place for more. So unless you are trent reznor or something, sorry, no.

Well Aardappel, you shouldnt nock him just yet because you dont know how good the other two will turn out compared to his so you should just let all 3 make them and take the best one and the other three can just be put in some mod or something someone makes.

he didn't knock him, he just answered his question. more music would consume more download space than we want to put up with. a mod could probably use it, yes, but it'd be a wasted effort if one didn't.

#4: Tracked music

by Pxtl on 09/27/2005 04:02

While it makes sense that the core music is lossy-audio, it'd be nice if some tracked music would be developed (or re-cycled). Tracked music is so much more compact, and the cube download is getting pretty bloated. Since a lot of people want to be able to download other content when they /getmap, it wouldn't be appropriate to download .oggs, but a tracked format would work well for that. Does Cube/Sauer support S3M or any other tracker formats?

MIDI, which is not a bad format if you've got a decent sound card. imho that is.

CL uses MIDI files exclusively, because of file size.

InnerEvil - do you have any samples available of what you had in mind?

Seems like everyone is speculating. Might be good, might be awesome, might be bad. We don't know yet. :)

Even if Aard didn't want to use my stuff for Sauerbraten, I'd still make the music for it and offer it on my site anyway. It's that much fun to do!

Saur/Cube just seems like the kind of game you would rather have quantity over quality.

do you understand what the word "minimalistic" means? it means less is better. quantity is not the goal, quality is what we're looking for. Cube focused on using the best, most streamlined stuff available, and Sauer is much the same, with a few basic differences.

Then I guess you would be happy with about 13 tracks?

ja. or, alternately, MIDI files could be used. that means quality loss for people without good sound cards, but oh well.

the problem with music is that it takes up a huge amount of space. one ogg vorbis song for cube can be greater in size than all of the maps in packages/base (this obviously depends on the song and how many maps you've downloaded.)

my dabbling in music has shown me that an original composition can be a huge headache, and a ton of work. i know it comes easier to other people, but it still seems like a lot of effort for fanatic or InnerEvil to go to, if the songs aren't used.

i'd love to have a quality Ogg Vorbis theme song for CL, but being on exceptionally slow dialup myself, i really appreciate any effort to save space. If someone wrote a song that they wouldn't mind me using, i'd probably put it up post facto as a bonus download.

but enough rambling from me...

I might be alone on this idea, but I think ALL the music should be a separate download...for people like me that just turn it off anyway. If I want music while I play, I'll play my music collection behind cube/sauer...but I never use the included music.

BTW, I mean no disrespect for those that create music...to each their own.

The way I'm doing the 20 tracks for Sauer is so it can randomly and seamlessly plug any 2 minute track together and it should fit, in other words, it should sound like a morphing type song.

I'm sure some people won't like the sound or the style for various reasons, that's to be expected. But I'm hoping that this method will win more of those people over.

Plus I'll be encoding them as lower quality OGGs that sound almost as good as CD quality, so they should be reasonable sized. If you're on dialup, then Sauer on it's own might seem too big, with or without the song files.

Might be good to offer a package without music at all for those that don't care about it. Doesn't matter to me, either way I'm still doing the tracks.

I think music should be free in general, so I put my share in. :)

actually, UT uses Oggs now...

i'll look into converting midis into mods or whatnot, can skale do that? it looks like it can.

really, about half of each sauer download is completely unnescessary- a lot of the models, ik textures, skyboxes, and music are never going to change, so you really only need to download them once. however, because that could get messy, it's make the most sense just to have the music in a seperate download.

Well just have a full version if Sauerbraten wich includes all the music, and another dialup user friendly version without it. Hell i dont see why dialup users have a reason to bitch, i used to be on dialup and i waited three four days for some games i wanted. Its just a matter of presistancy and desire.
