New masterserver version

by SleepwalkR on 09/07/2005 11:47, 22 messages, last message: 09/08/2005 15:02, 7401 views, last view: 05/04/2024 23:42

Hi everyone,

I have just installed the new master server on this system. You may have noticed this by two things:

1. There is no HTML server browser anymore. This will be added later.

2. Your server receives the message "Your server was not added because it does not support the current protocol version" upon startup. At Aards request, the master server does not accept connections from old servers. Servers must use protocol version 122.

3. Your server receives the message "Your server was not added because it did not respond to ping!" upon startup. To check the protocol version of your server, the master server sends a request to your server on port 28766 and expects a response. If your server fails to send that response for whatever reason, it will not be registered. By the way, if the master server cannot get through to your server, players won't either.

Ok, I hope it works, report bugs here and have fun playing the latest version of Cube!

Seems to be OK now. I notice only the new version now shows - is that correct?
I would imagine most people dont yet have the later version of the game - so they would have trouble locating a server to play on now?
But the new release versions all show fine.

kernowyon: That is correct. Aard explicitely asked me to change the server so that only the latest version is accepted.

Morgaine2: The forum is pretty much fixed now. I don't have any time to update that, sorry. As you can see from the time it took me to update the master server, I have very little time beside work and studies to devote to cube.

I thought that was the case. I personally think Aard has made a mistake on this. The number of people using the new version is still quite low. Some of the lack of numbers may be down to the servers not showing the new release until now, but several new version servers have been publically mentioned here for instance - yet very few people play on them.
The vast majority will log on for a sopt of fragging later - and suddenly find they get the same error which those of us with the new version were getting last week - different protocol.
Now, bearing in mind the majority of those with the new version are regulars to the irc and forum, there was a large number of "whats happening here" posts.
Imagine how many posts will be generated by the change which affects the vast number of Cube players who dont visit the forum or irc.
Maybe some sort of news posting on the main page - and perhaps a topic header in the irc will help to offset the many repeats of the questions about the changes?
On a slightly different tack - I too have seen the coding mentioned by wasdaplus.

it's not gonna take very long for people to switch over to the new version of cube... eventually it will be beneficial if the old version is not shown anymore.

More publicity might help - has the new version even been mentioned on the major sites like HappyPenguin and suchlike yet?

The masterserver is failing to list servers again. I waited a couple of hours before reporting it in case the problem solved itself. But its still not listing any servers at all :(

I also get no servers showing, and also a lot of the long HTML stuff mentioned in #6 by wasdaplus (above). Sometimes it shows games but mostly it doesn't. I've also had times where I joined a game to have it instantly crash me out into Desktop (stuck in big screen mode). The xconsole mentioned connection errors. I'd say the mainserver connection is very unstable.

I see mostly 503's and the message about the webmaster (no address given). I think it's all some marketing gimick from SUSE.

have fun.

I see the error now, too. Sorry about that. I'll see if I can fix it now.

It's an issue with too many open sockets - my bad. I just forgot to paste some of the old code into the new version =). I'll fix it now.

That error message was the result of a bug in the server. If an old server connects, it will receive an appropriate message. Old clients will just fetch the server list of new servers, since there is no way for me to detect the protocol version of a client that is requesting the server list.

seems to be working now. Thanks :)
My server runs the 22 August 2005 version - but there is a later one - a week or so later. My own server seems to not be showing in the latest masterserver list, but was showing earlier- is this becuase of the week difference? If so, I can update the server I guess :)

Mark, I'm not sure about that. I don't know whether the protocol has changed between those two versions. If you restart your server, you should see the reponse from the masterserver, it will tell you if your server uses an old protocol.

Thanks again SleepWalkR :) I restarted it - got a nice new welcome message from the masterserver - and all is working fine :) Must have needed to reboot the server after the changes - thanks again :)

I haven't announced the new cube anywhere but on this forum... and I am not going to either, I will let nature take its course. Feel free to post to your favourite gaming sites :)

The '29 version only has fixed stereo sound, so should not affect servers.

Thanks for all the hard work sleepy... lets the games begin.
