Mac version of Cube 2005_08_29 released!

by absinth on 08/31/2005 21:30, 34 messages, last message: 01/10/2006 08:54, 5571 views, last view: 05/18/2024 20:17

hello all
i just released a mac version of Cube 2005_08_29:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/cube/cube_2005_08_29_mac.dmg?download

i've tested single player, but not multi-player. i've added a mac-specific "launcher-app" that lets you choose the screen resolution. i hope the release is ok.
if you have any issues post them here, i will try to take care of them when i come back from holidays in two weeks ;)

have fun

#4: Buggy multiplayer...

by Ungus on 09/02/2005 00:50

Hey, I tried out the multiplayer for Cube on OS X. Seems buggy.

First, I tried using the menus to browse for servers. Mega crash; not even Control-Option-Escape could save me from this one. Believe me. I tried everything. Totally frozen, had to force a shutdown via the power button.

Then I went to the site, got the ip of a server with people on it, and used the /connect command to connect to it. I was alone on the server.

So I ran a little test. I had a friend of mine (who also got a crash from the server browser) connect to a server, then I connected to the same one. We both got the same results: we couldn't see one another.

My computer is a 17" iMac G4 with OS X 10.3, while my friend's is a Mac Mini (G4, of course) running OS X 10.4

Anyone else get this problem? Thanks in advance.

Let me know if you have a solution.

By the way, although it's not perfect I REALLY like the direction this game is heading in. A LOT.

Hi,
I tried on my amazingly fast 667MHz powerbook, running OS X 10.4.2. The launcher worked ok, but multiplayer ... After failing to find the console command I went for the menu option and had more or less the same experience as Ungus in the above posting. (Crash, no recovery, reboot the hard way -- total flashback to OS9).

I also think that Cube OSX may have the "double pointer bug", that is you have black pointer at the center of your sreen if you have divx installed.

Sorry, forgot to mention this:

I also had my black cursor still in the middle of the screen while I played, as mumbo$jumbo said. Just thought I\'d let you know it\'s not an isolated incident. Hiding the mouse should be a relatively simple matter; I believe the guys at Apple made it fairly easy.

I\'m actually going to get a 12 inch PowerBook G4 with Combo Drive today. It runs a Geforce (not sure what kind), and the processor speed is 1.5 GHz. I\'ll check back later to let you know how it went; I think four of the same results will identify this as a universal problem undeniably.

By the way, let your mom know I said, \"Word.\"

Sorry, I had to say that. I was afraid I may have actually posted a Forum message that was actually entirely useful... Can\'t have that!

Later.

#7: Found the problem

by MikeC on 09/02/2005 19:44

Hey, I'm doing the same stuff on my Mac Mini and I did a little more research. He hasn't included the server browser yet. If you look in the readme, it isn't even written, so that menu item is pointing to nothing, explaining the crash.

As far as being connected but not seeing eachother, look at the top where the game puts all the connection info. It says "connected to server" but then immidiately says "illegal network message (type)" and the "disconnected." I'm trying to figure out what causes this and the only thing that google returns for "cube fps 'illegal network message'" is a thread on this forum on which somebody who compiled this game in freeBSD having the same problem. The response he got was "you're screwed"

I hope somebody figures this out because this game looks like a lot of fun.

I'm having this problem too. Quite annoying. Will it go away if I uninstall DivX? (I hardly ever use it anyway.)

Not strictly true. No masterserver for the new version yet.

Okay, I tried it. I had "DivX 5.component" installed under /Library/QuickTime. I moved it out of that directory, logged out, and viola, no more pointer. Nice.

I remember that Enemy Territory had the same problem, but I've since uninstalled it, so I don't know if this fixes the problem there too.

Now to get the server browser working. :) On my machine (PB G4, 1.33GHz, 768MB, 10.3.9), I can still double-Command-Option-Escape out of the program... but I shouldn't have to.

>you can't play online with binaries you compiled yourself.

i've compiled it from the REAL sources i got from aard so this is not the problem ;)

>First, I tried using the menus to browse for servers. Mega crash; not even Control-Option-Escape could save me from this one.

yes the server-browsing does NOT work, but since the master server isn't updated anyway this isn't a big problem. i will have a look at it when the master-server is updated...
yes this currently leads to a crash but i was always able to Control-Option-Escape out ... try hitting enter after the combo to confirm...

nevertheless, normal multiplayer works fine, i just connected (manually) to "godzilla.uib.no" and had a good fight ;)
