Simple what yoou have said isnt too much on Cube its more about your blog.

#4: Jean Pierre....

by shadow516 on 06/07/2005 00:28

jean pierre being the first one to reply to a thread can never be a good thing....

That being said, yes youngrepublican, we don't appreciate ads. If you absolutely NEED to post your site please write it as:

"P.S.: If you want more info you can check out my weblog at http://youngrepublican.blogspot.com "
-and put a link to this site on your weblog while you're at it! ;)

Now, on to the question. You can get the mac binary at: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/cube/cube_2004_05_22.tar.gz?download

After you've downloaded that unpack/unzip/unstuff (whatever) it to a cube directory (I like mine on my desktop in a folder marked "cube" - but whatever you like).

Still with me? now, run cube.exe located in the cube directory and voila!

- Now go make some maps and upload 'em to http://www.cube.snieb.com

P.S.: I like the name. I know someone who just fits your description - young, republican, and a Mac fan.... Just a coorelation. :)

#5: thank you for the help but...

by youngrepublican(on a different computer) on 06/07/2005 04:43

jean pierre still doesn't make any sence...

i have a total of about 3 line about my blog and atleast 11 about cube...

I thought that being in the cube community meant people who like cube and other game engine related topics, could make conversation with other people…

I don’t want to make you go to my blog. It’s just that I thought that someone might have the slightest interest in the same things that I have (cube, and other shit)… so they might be interested in reading my blog…

As for shadow516 – Thank you for the help… but Mac’s and osX 3.9 (or any mac os) doesn’t open “.exe” files…

If any body else could help me with my predicament, it would be much obliged.

Thanks for your time
Regards the young republican

Someone can correct me if I\'m wrong, but I think that .exe is the standard for a standalone program. Windows uses a .bat to run cube in a dos environment, and -nix systems use .exe\'s. Regardless, there should be two standalone programs in the extracted cube directory. Run whichever one is labled \"cube\". The other should be \"server\" or something similar.

We Linux guys use shell scripts - which are similar in principle to windows.bat files :)
Exe files are Windows executable binary files :)
So when you run the windows cube.bat or whatever its called, it will call the cube.exe or whatever it is.
In Linux, we use the cube_unix shell script to call the Linux executable binary file. But we dont call them .exe files - thats a Windows phenomenon ;)
Not got a Mac, but there is a Mac tar file in the Cube directory - which I guess needs extracting and inside will be whatever format is used on Macs to run Cube?

quite a few I think :) In the pub servers, I often see many people with Linux related names who are using Linux.
I am part of the development team for a distro ( well - more admin and stuff myself) and we have a Cube team ourselves ;)
I guess that Linux people tend to discover Cube more easily than Windows players - possibly because we are more limited with the games available to us? Not that Cube isnt a good game! But in Windows, you get a much wider selection of games to fill your time.
Its better now - with Quake3, UT and Doom3 for instance available natively for Linux, but Windows is still the preferred choice for most gamers I guess.
Having tried out a 64 bit OS, I found it was a lot of hassle - I never got Cube to successfully run on it. I suspect a 64 bit SDL lib would help though ;)

Hopefully :) Gentoo should emerge the 64 bit SDL libs I guess - I tried with Kubuntu - and got nowhere as yet - but I havent spent any time on it tbh.
It will be interesting to know how you get on. Btw - sorry if we have hijacked the thread youngrepublican.

all this talk about 64 bit os's makes me think that mac osx is a 64 bit os...
maybe there is a similer problem... but

other people don't seem to have this problem... or do they?

i have no beef with the hijack - it keeps the thread in the top few and there fore attracts more people...

maybe i should have named it differently...

all the best

If I had a Mac, I would see what I can do.
( Offers kindly accepted) ;)
I looked in the Cube download and there is a Mac install in there. Its a tar file - which I assume Macs can open with the unzipping software which is on Macs.
The one thing which doesnt appear in there is the SDL libraries.
Bearing in mind Mac OSX is based on BSD, a Unix system, I had a look round the web and came across a site which may help -
http://www.davidseah.com/archives/2005/02/08/installing-sdl-on-the-mac/
Cube needs these libraries to run, so unless you have SDL already, or there is an easier way to get them, it may be worth a go?

by youngrepublican on 06/08/2005 15:05

btw - if you put OSX into the search facility on the Cube forum, there are some other threads in there - the first one looks quite useful.

I'm going to be adding definitions of phrases and slang to my own webpage so you too can sound like an intelectual pushplay. For instance, today's word is: self-important.
