Cube & Cube 2 FORUM

first relatively mature sauerbraten release!

by Aardappel_ on 05/25/2005 01:09, 260 messages, last message: 09/07/2006 16:01, 172600 views, last view: 04/19/2024 22:47

get it from: http://strlen.com/sauerbraten/

This is the first release that makes sauerbraten a usable engine, now that it has gorgeous lighting (thanks eihrul), and much of the old cube gameplay works again. It is still a little rough around the edges and requires more optimisation, but it is very interesting for developers, mappers (we need more playable & pretty maps!) and even players (MP & SP work).

This thread is for feedback on the current release from a mapping/playing perspective, for reporting bugs and technical discussions use the other threads.

-I don't think there is a time limit for dm matches (you get stuck on the same map...).

-It is really hard to see people when they are in shadows. If would be better if they were a little brighter.

-I can select corners but the scroll button still affects the whole cube.

Other than that most things work quite nicely.

I just figured out you have to hold f down . :)

Freakin' awesome. The lighting makes the maps gorgeous - and what happened with the rifle particles? It looks incredible. Plus, something fellow space-map fans will love, you can die by jumping off the level now. Hooray for meatbombs.

One minor technical thing - I can see seams between the geometry polys in some spots. Do I need to turn on filtering somewhere ?(yeah, I'm too lazy to rtfm).

I am an idiot. There is a 10 min limit for dm matches and my monitor was set too dark...

One other thing when you try to sendmap most maps it complains about the map being too large to send.

...and I forgot to say that the new lighting looks awesome, as does the new water.

Can't play due to low fps. Haven't tried it on dad's laptop (he won't be home until Friday) but I'm almost 100% sure the problem is mine (pentium 4 with radeon 7500). Other opengl games including cube work, I've never seen such nice lighting on my machine and previous sauerbratens were fine so my simple logic leads me to the conclusion that the problem has something or everything to do with lighting.

rendering the lightmaps itself is cheap... what is not so cheap is that it is causing the amount of vertices to be exploded to almost 4 fold because the texture coordinates are different. This is one of those things that has yet to be optimized. If your card is weak on geometry thruput you will get low performance (and the 7500 certainly is pretty old by now). You should be able to do a /newmap and learn how to create very efficient maps with as few cubes as possible ;)

#9: sauer runs smooth as silk! :)

by da-mitaman on 05/25/2005 23:16

just downloaded and tried this version of sauer. it's smooth, fast, and pretty. can't wait to try mapping some single player (just need to find the time). is it possible to "import" cube maps and "adjust" them or must they be totally rebuilt from scratch?

great job to all that worked on this, you should all be proud.

#11: sweet engine

by kurtis84 on 05/27/2005 03:27

WOW!
Great work on this newest release guys, Im very impressed! Ill definately be willing to contribute a few maps to this engines future releases.

Mapping is great. I was worried about too much being different, and having to learn yet another engine. BUT, you guys have put a lot of thought into the new features, and it all seems to be working great...Im in love ;)

Performance is awsome, even on an extremely huge map, but I think Ill stick to smaller layouts, so I can work with small grids, and still get some good fps.

Excellent work people!

Cool now it is playable at least half-playable cause no single player is allowed and that wont happen due to people love multiplayer and want to remove single player out.

I havenĀ“t heard anyone here talk about abandoning singleplayer.

If you read most of the posts there are references to

-Yeah Cubeengine stands better for multiplayer

And alot of these and they make this(and Sauer)to ignore SP maps also there are more multiplayer maps then single player maps....that is so hard to say that Sauer will have atleast 60 single player maps cause Cube 2004 has 40/50 i dont know exactly multiplayer maps.

#15: Problems

by RealNitro on 05/27/2005 19:37

I tested this release on my computer this morning, and everything looked great! Congrats! But now I'm @home, and on this box, all textures are black. The frame rate is fine, but I can't see where I'm going.

System is:
- AMD Athlon 1000mhz
- Win XP Pro
- ATI Radeon 9500pro

I'll try again this evening with updated drivers for the Radeon.

#17: hmm.. a few complaints

by CC_machine on 05/27/2005 23:11

a few things/suggestions:

1. have i missed something here, how do you change the textures??

2. there is no fist model (not all that important, just thought id mention it)

3. there is no kickback so tricking is impossible except for rocketjump

4. there are too many particles for the rifle, my fps is fine till i fire the rifle, goes down to about 2 frames a second (although fps counter doesnt get a chance to decrease)

5. monsters sometimes get half stuck in the floor (lol i just anihilate them)

6. the water command, it only goes down to a certian level (so you get water above air.. NOT natural)

Hmm.. is it possible to select a bunch of cubes and modify them with Q as a single one? Or how else can I make those great stairs like in the stairz map without modifying every small cube?
