New Album For Cube?

by _Fanatic on 05/21/2005 17:04, 21 messages, last message: 06/01/2005 19:25, 3386 views, last view: 05/02/2024 07:33

I've been thinking about making another album for Cube, probably the same metal style as the one I wrote for the last release of Cube.

This would be a new add-on versus a replacement. You could mix and match the two, or turn off the old one and just use the new ones.

The album I did for the last Cube release still gets lots of downloads on my website (4,353 as of today) and is the most downloaded album I've done, so I figure people like it fairly well.

Thoughts?

Honestly, I favour the old pingpong soundtrack because imho it fits the game better (more "generic computer game music" - like.)
But there are a few tracks in your soundtrack that have some techy elements, and I like those best.
It would be cool if you could merge your kind of metal a little more with some Industrial/"computer" elements.
Don´t get me wrong, but also a more "modern" guitar sound (little more bass and more "tuby" would be nice imho ;)
Of course it´s all a matter of taste and can´t be argued over, just my 2 cents to this :)

Well you know I love your music, so I would be all for this. But yes, featuring two albums in the download might be a bit much.

So there's a couple of things we can do. If you make a similarly good album, we could swap em out, and make the new one bundled for the new release, and the old one an optional download. Or we can devise a system whereby we have multiple albums as optional addons... but that would reduce the number of people that actually download a soundtrack at all significantly (the majority of downloads of cube are from casual players who want to quickly try it out, they won't bother with a soundtrack if its not bundled).

I'd say offer the albums as optional add-ons. I would of course host them on my server, but you can host them here too if you want. But it would have to be EASY to add a sound track, and also be able to select it from a menu option too. Or maybe in-game album downloads, where Cube would download it like a map in game, and install it for you and start playing it?

Maybe make a new menu for Music, and have it show albums in a new folder for cube?

Like [cube.exe]\albums\[album name]\[ogg or MP3 files]

And also a console command to swap albums? Just something easier to do and manage.

As for the sound, it would be tense, punchy and tight like the other songs I did, since it would be for deathmatch. No electronic stuff, all metal guitar stuff. Doing MIDI doesn't much appeal to me anymore.

But, I've improved the sound quality of my guitars a good bit since then, and I have over 30 new tracks which I unfortunately can't play for you guys (they are all for other pending gaming projects), but it's honestly THE best stuff I've ever done, and very fitting for an FPS, especially DM play.

yeah, I would make it such that they can download a soundtrack to the cube directory, and cube will automatically pick it up. Infact, I'd probably make an installer for the windows crowd this time.

that would probably help the number of one time questions. i personally prefer zips and such, but installers are pretty easy to figure out :)

fanatic: i feel that your more SP-ish songs, the ones that have more of a background theme (such as Lost in the Mist) aren't as appropriate as Unreleased Rage, which is a bit more sporatic and forceful. Don't get me wrong, i love all your music, i just favor the more intense, less structured music for both SP and DM. So that's my 2 cents, rambling as it is.

Keep the ideas coming, even if it's something you don't like about my music. That will help me invision what I'd like to do with the new tracks.

Aard - I like that idea. I know we've seen our fair share of first time user questions, since Cube does take a little reading to be able to tweak some stuff, which most people don't seem to take the time to do. :)

I like most Cubed to death, can't say why. Talking about music is kinda hard. Maybe I like it because it starts tense and then goes free.. or something.

Fanatic,
I just want to say I love your music for cube and many other songs you have on your site. I listen to them in the background when working in AutoCAD at work or just messing around with textures at home. Your heavy stuff kicks butt! Great guitar work. Keep it up.
Best wishes - MitaMAN

Yeah, I don't have music on in Cube but listen to the tunes often when i'm doing whatever.

If you could get some more done for Cube I think that would be great.

#11: Music "moods"

by Wispa on 05/24/2005 11:31

This probably should be under feature requests, but it regards music...

I havent looked at Cube yet, just downloading it now but i think a "mood" function would be cool. What i mean is this:

When you enter a predefined area of a map, a "mood" for that area is defined, this then depicts which album track is played (ie. "ambient", "scary"). Cube then picks (randomly?) a track that the user has defined as being that "mood" (by placing the mp3/ogg file in albums/moods/ambient/track1.mpg etc)

Tomb Raider does this sort of thing at it works quite well...

Just a suggestion from a newbie...

#12: Yeah, may be add local music/sound?

by Axel on 05/24/2005 11:44

Hi Aard, hi _Fanatic,

as Wispa already mentioned, a mood feature would help the cube feeling a lot.

So you'd enter a level area, and the common map music blends out and a scary one blends in.

You could also play a special theme when the player get's weak/dead in single player.

@Fanatic:

I'd ALSO like to see something more pumping and speedy (as ISOTOXIN from NECROS in Greed and also in UNREAL1). Very stmulating and motivating.

Just my 2 dineros,
Axel ;)

Mitaman did it in mspsp5 using scripting.
However having "mood transitions" like in unreal1 is afaik done using tracker music that can be handled more dynamically.

Your music is sweet'n all but I hate double bass druming. John Bonham form Led Zeppelin had a single petal on his kit and he could do doubles and triples and all sorts of crazy stuff, which is awesome if you incorperate it in the song right. But the rolling double bass is really annoying, ruins your songs in my opinion.

this isnt relevant to your album, fanatic, but i want to use the old musics from DooM (such as http://hitech.clearcrystal.co.uk/E2M3%20-%20Intermission%20from%20DOOM.mp2 for example) for a map im making, but cube wont play mp2s! the only way to use then is to turn the music off in cube and play them in wmp on my desktop! help!

Does anyone know how to convert mp2s to mp3s? i know cube plays those

Look on google for something to convert an MP2 to WAV.

Then you can use something like musicmatch (musicmatch.com) to convert to MP3.
