I hate to say it, but personally I think the way the 'main' threads here run is annoying. it is so hard to follow conversations. As nice as having a "simple" forum is, the benefits of a normal threaded forum seem immense. You cannot really fault people for posting like this here when every other forum in the world (to at least a 99.9% majority) works differently.

99.9% is a bit exaggerated isnt it?

no, I do not think it is. by installation count I think phpbb/vbulletin 'style' boards (categories, forums, threads, posts) make up at least 99.9% of the forums in the world. by users i would say more like 99.99%. i frequent perhaps 10 forums, with an aggregate of about 200000 users. of all of them only this forum uses this simplistic model, all of the rest are virtually identical to each other in terms of posting pattern and organization. the least common one would be slashdot, but even slash offers "normal" style forums as well.

well, none of the 99.9% of boards is able to show me only exactly the new posts that I haven't read in a thread... a features which I personally find indispensable. I like this style of board better for that reason alone. I guess the other boards don't do it because it requires too much server side data per visitor if you have that many possible threads.
