BLANK SCREEN? pls help :(

by MK on 02/26/2005 15:01, 15 messages, last message: 03/22/2005 22:56, 1583 views, last view: 05/01/2024 17:30

When I run ./cube_unix the screen goes blank and nothing is happening. The computer is not responding, Ctrl-alt-del, Alt-tab, Ctrl-alt-esc, nothing helps. So I had to shut down the computer manually by power button. I have also tried launching Cube with -t parameter. A black window appeared with title "Cube engine" and the computer stopped to respond. But the system didn't hung - i saw the clock in the corner to increase minutes ;) I am running Mandrake 10.1 Official. Any help would be very appreciated.

p.s: in windows xp everything works very vell :(

nevermind what jean pierre says....
It should run on mandrake like on any other linux distro, but I am afraid I can´t offer any help here...
Only thing I can say is that cube has known to have problems with the newer drivers for both linux and ati on all platforms..
someone else might help you, but it´s not me, so can anyone help here?

I am using GeForce 4 (generic) driver for my graphics card. Don't I have to d/l the right drivers from the NVidia site? I tried it on Mandrake 9.1 and it didn't work. Any1 could tell me if it could solve my problem?

btw.: my card is MSI GeForce4 440MX 64 MB RAM... :)

does it happen at any screen resolution?
you might try some diffrent nvidia drivers (preferably a little older ones).. dunno if that helps though, just guessing.

BUT: i have an older version of Cube and it works! But the older version runs at 1 frame per 5 seconds :( so i think i need new drivers but i can't install the new ones because i need to compile new kernel :(

If you're getting that poor of a frame rate, it's not hardware accelerated.

First off, what to do when the screen goes blank or stops responding. Press Ctrl-Alt-F1 to switch to another virtual console. This still works, even though SDL is capturing Ctrl-Alt-Delete and every thing else. Log in as user and type "ps -e" to list all process. Look for the process called linux_client. It should be near the bottom of the list, but you can scroll the console with Shift-PageUp and Shift-PageDown. You need to kill that process, but to do so you will have to do it forcefully, to type "kill -9 ####" filling in the process id number listed for the linux_client process. You can list all the process with "ps -e" again to make sure it's dead. You should logout now ("logout"), unless you expect to need to do this again. Use Ctrl-Alt-F7 to switch back to the desktop. The screen resolution will probably be wrong, so use Ctrl-Alt-+ or Ctrl-Alt-- to change the screen resolution until it matches your desktop again.

Now, as to getting working nVidia drivers, truth is, I havn't been able to get the drivers from nVidia working either. However, there are a couple RPMs that Mandrake provides that do work, but for a slightly older driver version. Unfortunatly, they are commercial packages, so unless you bought Mandrake 10.1 or have a club mambership, they are not available to download.

nvidia-kernel-2.6.8.1-12mdk-6111-1mdk.i586.rpm
nvidia-6111-4mdk.i586.rpm

There are different nvidia-kernel RPMs for the different kernels Mandrake provides, but that one is most likely the one you need.

I havn't tried getting the generic drivers working, but I'll see what I can do if it will help you. I'm sorry I can't be of more help here, but you can email me if you would like more help.

I get the same problems with the latest nvidia drivers, on both windows and linux. maybe try some 53.xx drivers instead?

Hi there, someone sent me the following files:
nvidia-kernel-2.6.8.1-12mdk-6111-1mdk.i586.rpm
nvidia-6111-4mdk.i586.rpm

I have installed the second package first and everything was going fine. Then i tried to install nvidia-kernel and it said that the /lib/modules/(the number of my the kernel from RPM) does not exist. I am using mdksmp kernel, because i have two-processor system.
Then i went to the /lib/modules folder, i found my kernel folder and copied it to the same directory with "mdksmp" in name. Then i tried toinstall nvidia-kenel the second time andit said this RPM is already installed. Was i doing something wrong? :(

Usualy, the nvidia driver works perfectly with any distro, but you have to log out from your X session.

Log in in a text console (runlevel 3) then run the driver as root. Simple as that.
