I can´t really help you on this, but have you tried to disable that 5.1 stuff ? that´s what I´d try...

I think fmod is responsible for the sound on cube, so try googling for other games using fmod and see if they work.

Fmod seems ok, as the music itself plays. About the sounds IIRC it's SDL_mixer so maybe this one has a problem.
That's still weird, as i suppose it's fmod that's on top of SDL (or they are in "parallel" and some lower-level library on the OS does the mixing?) so if it was really a SDL_mixer problem the music wouldn't play too.
I don't really know the sound code... time for some code reading :)

I thought the SDL mixer was only used in linux. Either way that's a weird problem you're having.

Yep, i was wrong about fmod+SDL_mixer, just checked the source and it's one or the other depending on the platform.
Checking sound.cpp i see only 2 possible causes:
-unlikely, his card drivers doesn't handle mono sound well(maybe it's worth trying if a mono mp3 music would play (maybe that explains why it's ok in SP, because maps loads specific music?))
-most likely, a problem with hardware channels, as they say in the FMOD doc.
the FMOD function for playing music is different and i think the music function, unlike the sound one, doesn't manage to load the full music file into the samples memory of the card. (there is a check which falls back to streaming mode if loading fails, so it probably uses a software channel when the whole music doesn't fit into the memory of the sound card)

If there is no option to disable sound hardware acceleration on your card's properties applet, you can try this:
http://www.esimgames.com/faq_problems.htm#I'm%20having%20problems%20running%20SB,%20and%20it%20might%20be%20related%20to%20my%20sound%20card.%20%20Is%20there%20anything%20I%20can%20do?
(it's for a game using DirectSound, but it might work for Cube, as according to FMOD doc, FMOD uses(by default/can use?) DirectSound)

#8: It's working for me |

Hallo!
Despite I use linux 95% of my time, I've also tryed the game in XP, and I was experiencing the same problem: no sound.
It's working for me after disabling "some" of the sound hardware acceleration, from "full hardware acceleration" to "standard Directsound acceleration" (both translated from spanish!).
If I disable the sound hardware acceleration completely the sound was awful.
Hope that helps you ;)
Good job!
