"The Odyssey" (mpsp5), a new SP map from MitaMAN

by MitaMan on 12/10/2004 23:04, 41 messages, last message: 12/30/2004 19:52, 5293 views, last view: 05/19/2024 00:23

Hello fellow CUBERS, I have a new single player map for you to try. It's large (about 800 monsters, about an hour of gameplay) with a variety of areas (mini-episodes) to explore and kill in. The map also includes some new textures and triggered music (Fanatic songs in CUBE).

You can get the map from here:

http://www.cleoisdead.net/mpsp5.zip

For added killing pleasure I suggest downloading the great game items (teleport, weapons, etc...my favorite is the Keycard and Teleport.) from DCP's web site.

http://cube.dietmarpier.de/

They add to the map, but are not required to play it.

To install "The Odyssey" just unzip the mpsp5.zip file into the main CUBE directory.

To play just type "sp mpsp5" (without the quotes) at the console and hit enter.

Gameplay hints: I suggest that when you teleport into a new area gather up supplies and save before moving on. Also, don't just blindly run into an area without checking out your surroundings, you will trigger more than you can handle if your not careful.

SLOW COMPUTER ALERT! Parts of the map are larger and more open than most CUBE maps. If the map runs too slow check the readme for suggestions on running it on slower systems.

Special thanks to Makke and Spentron for their "map editing aid".

As always, feedback is welcome. I spent many hours over several months making this map and would enjoy hearing what you guys think. My new email address is in the readme.

Come for the fun, stay for the killing!!

MitaMAN

I hope you enjoy it, alot of time went into it. I just hope it runs ok on other (slow) computers. This map really pushes CUBE.

#4: stupid e key!

by staffy2000 on 12/11/2004 00:57

i got to the second last room. but i pressed the e key which respawned all the enemies which then killed me (i don't save). I don't know how you put that many monsters in. crazy.

1. layout
Excellent, that map uses all visual power that the cube engine can give. Very good lighting and nice details. The map shows also different texture-styles, so there is always a room that looks new and interesting.

2. monsters
Good placed. The fights are full of action. As example that room with boxes and the rhinos rushing aroud those boxes was very nice, i did some great frags there. IMHO, the only boring part are those 2 _large_ rooms where every 8 cubes at your left/right were a bunch of enemies attacking you. Althought, the fight situations are good 'designed'.

3. items
At the begin and at the end there is really too much ammo/health. In the 'middle' of the map, i had sometimes no ammo and had to fist down 3 bauuls. Often, when i hit a trigger and there were some monsters in front of me, i saw some fresh ammo/health behind that enemies, so i had to rush through them to survive, that was very nice.
There was too less chaingun ammo. Its kinda hardcore to frag 10 goblins & rhinos only with the rifle (as example). With a chaingun its nicer to frag those damn goblins ;)

4. Bugs
a) http://drian.homelinux.org/~drian/cube/mpsp5_bug1.png
b) The triggers on the computer-machines dont work well, i needed jump around a long time till they triggered
c) In total you teleport 2 times back to the start. On the 1 'back-teleporting', one trigger wasnt hit correct, so there were no new monsters in and i had to walk again through the whole map

5. Misc
I dont really like the skulls on the walls. Mabe my opinion is a bit special there, but i think cube should not become as dark as quake (as example). I hope there will never be maps with satanic pentagrams ;)

6. Upshot
That map rules. I really enjoyed the fights and the ambience. Great work, thank you !
Some rooms are really perfect for fights, you have the skill for a multiplayer mapper ;D

It's genuine Cube singleplayer. Personally I don't like it as a whole, but I had some moments which got very close to a DOOM experience (and we all know DOOM is a very, very professional thing).

Of course as a guy who wants to improve his work you probably want the worst of it. I can't say if it will be of any help as it's more a personal experience, but here it goes - the first disappointment came after surviving a room, and then a corridor full of rhinos. I felt cheated because monsters that followed were easier, and it doesn't depend on the skill level unless you want to switch it manually while playing, which is not a good thing to do. Later I got bored and careless, I saw a large corridor with much health and though I was at 100% ran as far as I can, the bad guys caught up with me and after a lot of jumping on monster heads, which is something Cube does not do well, I received a heroic funeral by one of those green shotgun guys.. forgot how they were called.

Mitaman, I expected it to be good, but this is insanely good :D

In my opinion the best piece of singleplayer action Cube has ever seen.

Especially the lights blew me away, VERY atmospheric, and in those long industrial corridors it was so good, I hardly believed it could be cube :)

Mitaman teaches us all a lession in lightning, architecture and monster placement here.

I agree with sinksky, it reminded me of Doom in some places, too :) It wasn´t specific stuff, rather the feel was "doomy" ... impressive.

The changing music added a good amount of atmosphere too, though I usually don´t like that kind of metal...

Sinksky: You were warned above about rushing in ;)

About skill progression, I think it´s hard in cube to do, esecially in a mission that long. I think it was done very good, why not let the player relax a little inbetween. Items were ok, some little imbalance here and there, but hey, this map is so huuuge, can you imagine playtesting it over and over? ;)

Well, what can I say,

EXCELLENT!!

It's definitly the best single player cube experience so far. The map looks great and the monster placement is awesome.

I have very few minor complains... too many rhinos in corridors... they kind of do instant hits, so without cover they are annoying as hell.

The difficulty was okay, it could have been harder... way too many ammoes and green armors though. Maybe you should have skipped a dozen or so green armors and put 2-3 yellow armors instead.

In the long corridor with the enemies hidden on the side, I simply ran to the other end of the corridor, then used the machine gun to drill me a hole back to the beginning then spammed them with rockets. It made the whole corridors seem quite pointless as there was zero challenge. Maybe you should put a few obstacles or something to prevent my kind of abuse. :)

Other than these very minor complains, its GREAT. Very good work, you magnificiently raised the bar VERY high for every other SP mappers. :)

It's beautiful! (and I love skulls on walls). I haven't had a chance to play through the whole thing yet but in a little while I'm going to hide out and play this until I'm twitching spasmodically, with eyes like boiled onions.

Your efforts are appreciated :-)

that map is huuuge! probably the longest yet (though one of spentron's is pretty big too). Lots of really nice architecture. Good use of colour in lighting. Good use of monsters & balance, though overal maybe a bit easy and sometimes samey/repeating. Reminded me that I have to make some minor tweaks to the monster stats (bigger rhino bounding box etc).

Some of the longer hallways I probably played different than intended: I would run to the end to wake up all the monsters, plow back through using the machingun and then take the rest out from a hiding spot. Much quicker! :0

More quality work. Very good and an appreciated addition to my weekend. Could have used 7 more kills to make it an even 800 %-) .

Yeah I also used that trick on hallways, but not too much at a time because it did earn me one death ;) .

I feel awkward criticising it because I can't match it (although I can do things *different* than this), but my sense is it would be good to have something more different, either in style or gameplay, about 3/4 of the way through -- my sense is I wouldn't add a thing through the first half. Also resources were only slightly excessive in the first half -- one spot got properly short on ammo -- but went way excessive later.

I really enjoyed this map. Nice and long, but there were some repetitve spots. Also, there was way too much ammo and health. Heck, I didn't even get close to dieing the whole game, let alone running out of ammo.

Really liked the arcitechture and the lighting. Very professional. Also, I was sorta disappointed at the end. I figured that carrot was gonna make a big battle, but instead it just finished the game.

Other than the difficulty, this was a very nice map, and definately one of the longest I've played.

You guys saying it's too easy, I can see where you're coming from, for I can actually enjoy this map without cheating :D

Most SP maps I couldn't possibly get through them.

I am one lamer who is grateful for plentiful ammo and health. Me, I just like to relax and enjoy the graphics when I play games.

I don't play games online... you guys would smoke my ass but good :-)

...I too rather suck at sp, and enjoy the occasional easy sp. Perhaps people should start making dual version of their maps, a real map and an easy version?

Hm. If someone would give me permission I'd be glad to do such a job myself.

Heh heh. A friend just suggested that I should temporarily replace the rhino with a cube, so it'd be easier to shoot. That's pretty tempting actually...

spentron had difficultly levels in his MM maps (which also contain a bunch of other nifty features, like saving) basically its an easy trigger that opens a bunch of doors throughout the level, and behind the doors is ammo and armor and health

I'm more like Grogan. I enjoy a good (SP) fight then like to look around to check out the visuals of the map. I can't get thru my own map without being killed a few times!
