Linux ATI drivers faster than Windows!?

by e:n:i:g:m:a on 12/10/2004 15:36, 43 messages, last message: 01/23/2005 02:09, 6603 views, last view: 05/05/2024 14:20

Hmm, just going back to windows to edit my maps, and I seem to get at least 10-20 FPS slower than in linux: In metl2, the startup map, where the rocket ammo is up on the hill, if I look out from there to where the chaingun ammo and the teledest is, I get ~60 FPS in linux, and ~45 FPS in Windows!!

Unfortunately, ATI's linux drivers are still buggy (random lockups anyone?) so I'm just gonna have to wait untill they get better.

Anyway, has anyone experienced this too?

Did you get xorg 6.8.0 to work with ATI drivers? last I heard, there was a bug and the latest ATI software would only work with 6.7.0-r* or lower.

Urr sorry about that, I originally had 6.8.0. The emerge for the ati drivers in gentoo downgraded me. I meant to say 6.7.0.

I'm enjoying the Hell out of cube now with my old ATI Radeon 7500 back in. Piss on the fan, I took it right off. It wasn't really doing much anyway. (really stupid little thing that was often encumbered by dirt anyways... the dirt is a bit gummy because I'm a heavy smoker. Every couple of months I scrape it out of fans and heat sinks lol)

I've noticed that Linux delivers superior game performance with other games. I am using an nVidia GeForce4 MX 4000, and I get 20-30 FPS in windows while playing a certain game alpha, but 70-100 FPS in Linux.

Linux makes ebtter use of your RAM, and requires less resources to run, so it'd better perform faster!

Linux without X requires little resources to run. Throw X and Gnome or KDE into the mix and it's a different story. That's part of the reason I run fluxbox at work.

yeah, when running games I *always* run them from Blackbox (same as flux in practice). I usually get 20 FPS more in Nexuiz in BlackBox then Nexuiz from KDE.

Although, since I only have 256MB of SDRAM, I would tend to assume it wouldn't be quite that drastic in other cases.

When running ANYTHING, I run it in Fluxbox, whether or not I need to free up some ram. I just like Fluxbox a lot.

If I really want to ease up on resources, I run X with the game as a replacement for the window manager instead of running it within the window manager.

I use XFCE4 as its very light, not as light as the *boxes, but still light. I always play games in a second X server, so I can ctrl-alt-f* between the servers and not have anything pop over my game window, and not having to bother with alt-tab. I also run my 2nd x server with an english keyboard layout, as it seems to work better than a french layout in most games, including cube.

Also, when toying with betas, if the display freezes, I can ctrl-alt-backspace kill the server and not lose any other app.

About the french keyboard, it works for typing command/message, but the different keys (AZQW) aren't recognized by the /bind command, neither if you set them as QWERTY nor AZERTY.

However it works if you put the mappings in keymap.cfg itself, but you need to make the mappings for an english keyboard:
keymap 97 A "left"
...
keymap 100 D "right"
...
keymap 115 S "backward"
...
keymap 119 W "forward"

This way you can type using the french keyboard and have a nice WASD (err... ZQSD ;)

The problem comes with the slash and special characters, like é è à etc... Cube just ignores them if they are not where expected, so I cant type commands with the shift-3 slash, I have to use the one above the keypad, which is annoying. Anyway, I can live without accents in cube. :)

And I use ESDF damnit, death to WASD! With esdf, you can keep pinky busy while playing, I like to have my grenades on W, zoom on Q and A, W for leaning if supported in the game.

By the way, french keyboards have qwerty layouts here in Québec. ;)

ESDF seems cool :) added benefit is that it is the same for azerty and qwerty.

TODO+= find 2 free binds for edit keys 'E' and 'F' ;)

Edit mode becomes W and solid becomes N, B, whatever you like. I use N personnaly. Its a key I use only rarely while editing.

I was just editing my autoexec.

I use F4 for edittoggle.
New key for pinky will do a x2 zoom accessible when moving and R will have the x4 zoom, for SP and huge maps.

Testing this play setting in DMSP then i'll chose some edit keys.

You know you can have multiple config files and just switch them when you wanna edit...

Ys, but as long as there are enough keys on a keyboard, i don't mind using 'nonstandard keys' so one config'll be simpler

Of you can do what pushplay did and have MASSIVE alises that act as seprate configs...
now all I have to do is type "tourneymode" or "Mappermode" or "slopemode" etc.... of course I've got mappermode bound to E, but that may move to f4...

On a side note, I've added a music advance/previous feature to my config... but you need the music list. If anyone wants the code, I could post it.

Here you go... it can be found here:

http://www.cubeengine.com/forum.php4?action=display_thread&thread_id=468

Copy & paste that stuff into your autoexec.cfg

You need to make a list of your music to make it work. I put my list in my autolist.cfg and added an 'exec autolist.cfg' into autoexec.cfg
