1) That question really has no meaning in the indie-free-software-dev-world. It works, and is stable, so the consensus is no, not beta. Alternatively, there are always more features to add, so one could consider it "incomplete".

2) Maps that are created in a short amount of time, often as a competition. Cube is ideal for this.
