new mod: Street Fighter Cube

by D.plomat on 08/28/2004 03:41, 28 messages, last message: 09/23/2004 19:19, 9902 views, last view: 05/18/2024 20:38

Hello all. I want to make a mod based on the Cube engine. It's gonna be one of the biggest games ever seen so you should really join the team.

Here is the idea for the game:

Games with guns are really evil and unfair. The ideal thing would be an MMORPG where ppl fight with hands and hand-weapons. They can use vehicles like in GTA3, and skateboards also. Each player have a group of very-strong-IA controlled teammates he can command like in Globulation2 to add an RTS dimension to the game. But the IA teammates aren't just units, they have their own complete parameters of alignment, personnality, loyalty, multiple status and emotions. Those emotions are visible on their faces with an experimental emotion drawer. Also there is an emotional prosody filter/modifier in the built-in speech synthesis.

But that's only the beginning, later we'll add speech recognition and a flight simulator.
Also the technology evolves like in Civilization.

Every player must choose his religion when he signs on because the magic/spells aren't the same if he's christian, hindu, voodoo or satanic. Those magic spells are called by doing street-fighter-like keystrokes plus spoking loud latin sentences on the mic and doing mystical-religious movements on the webcam (or using the included USB voodoo doll)

It will be based on Sauerbraten engine so it's name will be "Super Smash Magic MMORPGRTS SauerFighter III"

Actually the team is:
1 leader
0 mapper
0 modeller
0 musician
0 coder
0 webmaster

The website is hosted at file:/dev/null ,is often updated so check it out often.

Well, it's a little bit ambitious but the concept is so good that i'll easily find 20 expert coders and 1 psychiatrist by posting my idea on each forum i can see that is somewhat related to one of those ideas.

I feel that this was targeted at me specifically, and my game Final Dawn.

We have:

1 Leader,
2 mappers,
3 modellors,
2 (or 3) musicians,
1 coder,
1 (or 2) webmasters,
4 artists.

That makes 14 people, plus others who have sadi they will help, but haven't yet begun. I also don't go and advertise on "every forum" the only forumI have ever mentioned this game on is this one. I simply thought that if I were to find somebody to mod cube, the cube community might be a good place to look.

But...because of the Cube Community's hotstility and sarcasm, we will most likely not support cube development, nor use it in our game. The other people on the team feel that choosing cube as an engine would be a mistake, thanks to people like you.

There was indeed some references to your mod, but also many other mods that had been announced here and never saw the light... i was just making a compilation of many things already read here plus some extras...

(This is Innovati)

I know there are lots of ambitious people who want to make mods, but what I'm ding is a little different, my project is nt a byproduct of Cube, but a seperate game, that *might* use the cube engine, maybe not. It does not REQUIRE Cube, but rather is an independant project.

I hae people I don't know e-mailing me with stuff (sword model was the latest) I didn't ask for for the game. This isn't just me and my buddies, this is a real project, with real people from all over. Canada, USA, Finand, Germany... definately not dying because you guys won't support us, we'll just go to an engine that does support us if we can't use cube...no big deal.

An engine doesn't support mods or games, it's available to their authors if they manage to code with it and take advantage of it.

Eventually if the game/mod gets to the point where there's a playable beta and people enjoy it then it can benefit from some contributions from the community and even some ppl will join the project.

But people of game engines communities are used (and bored) to see dozens of projects announced so they won't bother investing time if they don't see a demo that proves the project is viable/robust... If you make it i'll say "congratulations" and even give some help if i like it. But like everybody here, i need to see something concrete (even only an alpha or very early unfinished code and content, but still something) to admit it has some value.

Or if the project is really beginning, the its development must be open, with *technical* (coding, mapping etc) discussions (so infact some tech base already existing) that can interest the techies here... if they see talent in those discussions they'll more tempted to cooperate.

But in free software world, a project leader must always first provide something concrete and attractive enough (or code/content with enough potential) before trying to recruit people.

Although this thread is more someone having fun at your (innovati) expense, for the most part skepticism is intended to be helpful. We've seen what happens here, we've heard of what happens in other mod communities. Usually, if the leader isn't capable of "mission-critical" work, the project fails. Often the leader is a coder, but there are other examples, for example Nehahra for Quake was lead by a machinema expert. BUT this shows another thing, Mindcrime made use of code already created, or people were already working on. Cube hasn't created the same response as the Quake open-source release... I also must mention I thought Cube would be great platform for projects to become popular since it's free, but the big commercial games have a ready-made audience that apparently is more significant.

I hear a call for code, but not one mention of _specifically_ what this new code is for. Maybe if you detailed min. and desired requirements, someone might say they'll spend a few minutes whipping something up.

As to swords vs. guns, this confuses what the weapons represent with their role in the game. Firstperson is primarily about engaging foes at a distance, and can be redone abstractly, using Nerf, or whatever with no change whatsoever in the resulting geometrical puzzle. Fighter view emphasizes close range combat. Third-person is a bastard son of the two and is best for games deemphasizing combat or evasion over attacking.

#10: can I join your team?

by _Aardappel on 08/30/2004 00:30

I can code, and I always wanted to make a game like that. Besides, I have some prior experience with the sauerbraten engine, so maybe I will be useful.

However I will only join if the game will have realistic physics, bumpmapping, reflective water, and of course lens flares.

#11: Oh and...

by _Aardappel on 08/30/2004 00:32

I intend to join your team, at first be extremely enthusiastic and promising to do a lot of work, then just come up with endless ideas and demand you incorporate them in your game, and then just really never doing any work for the game after all.

But I supposed that it expected of any project member.

#12: mapping

by SirLiveAlot. on 08/30/2004 02:21

Once I finish or give up on the Doom 3 map , I would like to give a hand mapping. I can't create textures though. I always enjoy mapping, especially for a new/diffrent engine or idea.

um.....was the last post by SirLiveAlot real???????

It sure sounded real...

And, about my game...news flash! We will probably be using the Quake3 engine, because the coder i found is learning to mod it. So...as much as i liked the speed and size of cube, i'm not going to fight him for it...especially when the community is so hostile and rude. What if he had come here for help...would you guys have treated him the same way you did me? He prolly wouldn't have ended up coding for me.

Another reason is because the modellors who wanna contribute can export to MD3 files, not MD2's. Their models won't work in Cube, unless you get support really quickly.

Anyway, If you really want to make that street fighting game, i know of some sound effects you could use, they're ripped from a kids game, but some of them are pretty funny. Also, i can code the entire particle engine, and make some fire effects, for when the guys catch on fire in the Human-Fireball-finale-battle. ;)

Indeed, and there will be all those features, and 250 realistic guns^H^H^H^Hknives and swords, and an underwater 3D oxygen-meter that changes color depending on the quality of ambient air.

And, shame on me, i even omitted the lens-flare that will turn the first-alpha into the 1.0 version that will really rock

bah, we wont need someting as primitive as mapping. We will have a satille uplink, and have an algorithm that automaticall converts satillette images into maps.

Once I finish or give up on the Doom 4 satillette uplink for the mars colony , I would like to give a hand designing a system to sent satilles to other systems via spacewormholehyperdrivevortex device. I can't create the shell though. I always enjoy making satillettes, especially for a new/diffrent universe or demsion.
