Boot CD Cube??

by e:n:i:g:m:a on 08/26/2004 17:11, 44 messages, last message: 10/06/2004 22:36, 4382 views, last view: 05/18/2024 20:38

So has anyone started making a boot cd version of Cube? I was just wondering what people's ideas are about it, etc.

Oh yeah, and I had an idea... what about using MinuetOS for the OS? It's not posix compatable though, so I dunno if anyone can do it...

duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh!!

Um, I started that thread a week ago, and NO! MenuetOs is not suitable for Cube.

I am a big supporter of menuetOS, and even mirror it at my site, but it is written in Assembly. I does not have the right libraries to even run Cube without HEAVY modification of both MenuetOS and Cube.

Also, MenuetOS does not have a very good hardware support, nor does it have it's own sound server. It uses the sound server from Windows, assuming you have windowson the machine ;)

Also, MenuetOS is a BOOT FLOPPY! Cube cannot fit on a boot floppy. You again, would have to make TONS of changes, and I'm having enough trouble getting a C++ programmer to help me, imagine trying to find somebody who can customize operating systems in x86 Assembly, IMPPOSSIBLE!

and....why would anybody go to all that trouble, when there are Linux boot CDs out there, with the support, the libraries, the sound server, POSIX compatibility, and NO modifications to Cube itself?

actually someone started it a *while* before you. And you complain about the cube community being hostile.... if the pot ever called the kettle black

huh? I'm not being hostile and shooting down any of your ideas am I? I'm not insulting you for no reason, or labelling you a wannabe or a loser? Am I?

Well about the BootCD thing, I'm not claiming to be the "first one" to voice the idea, but maybe since it IS a popular topic, maybe we should just go ahead and make one. Get it over with.

Wooah, hold on there!! I didn\'t mean to start an argument, I was just making a suggestion and I couldn\'t find the old thread. Anyway I KNOW that Minuet is a floppy-based system, but it is also open source... it COULD be modified to be used wtih cube...

Anyway, Thinking back on it, It seems something such as KNOPPIX would be a better choice...

IMHO we should create a system where compatable-format CD\'s function in computers like a console: no setup no installation, just pop the CD and play...

Oh yeah, I\'ve finally got Gentoo up and running! YAY!

WHY GENTOO?????

I never ever ever understood that. Why gamers use Gentoo. The ONLY answer I've ever gotten from one of the gentousers was that he used it because it had "portage", an installation program which would automatically compile and check dependancies for him. In the command line. Wake up! Redhat has GUI versions of the same thing. And Mandrake is even better. Also, in mandrake you can do it formt he command line by typing "URPMI". Debian people have apt-get, and SuSe people have YaSt. Is there any other reson to get Gentoo (anything it can run, all the other distros run too)??

And about MenuetOS. You would AT LEAST have to re-compile the Cube engine. MenuetOS is written in x86 Assembly, not C++ or a C++ friendly language. It is a BOOT FLOPPY! not a boot cd. Don't get me wrong, I love MeuetOS (I even mirror it at my site), but it WILL NOT do the job of a boot medium to play Cube in.

As for running Cube from a CD in your host OS, without installation...how do you think i first found it? It was on a livecd of Linux software that would run in windows. Just burn your Cube folder onto a CD. Any program that installs all of it's files in ONOE directory will run off a CD. UT2003/UT2004 will run, star Wars Jedi Knight 2 will run. Cube will run, as well as Mozilla and the GIMP and Openoffice. You should google LiveCD and try getting to the site and downloading the .iso and burning it. It is quite something what that guy pulled off.

OK, Why gentoo? i'll tell you:

1. Gentoo is alot easier to configure... the config programs included in redhat and mandrake work half the time at best
2. (you are gonna smack me...) Gentoo has portage. This means that when you want to install a game, you don't have to scower the internet for the libs and programs that you need to run that game, it all just does it automatically (and the package managment in Redhat is really bad...)
3. When you install gentoo, you can build it with optimizations specific to your processor architechure... the result is a faster running operating system
4. In my experience, gentoo also works better installing the ATI drivers, in Redhat and Mandrake Mesa always seems to override the ATI alternative, and then you don't get hardware 3d
5. If you are a serous gamer, all the above optimizations, easinesses are good for you because _most_ (not all) of the "gamers" that I know don't know that much about computer software, just how to install and play
6. And, if you've used mandrake as long as I have, then you come to realize that it is a BIG pain in the butt to find RPM binarys that actually work with Mandrake or Redhat or any other RPM-based flavor of linux. In comparason, compiled versions of software have a significantly less chance of failing or not being compatable with your hardware or setup because they were made on your computer...

As far as MinuetOS, it was just a goofy pipe dream, OK? I'm not gonna actually make a MinuetOS-Cube floppy/cd/zip/WHATEVER.

Oh yeah, and RPM installations really stank after you get used to portage... trust me on this one, you will need to use gentoo to understand. In my experience RPM's only install part of the time and that is AFTER you locate all the dependencys on the web, Portage does all that for you, and they work more often because they are compiled on your system (as I said before)

#10: Gentoo

by DrRatchet on 09/04/2004 21:47

Gentoo's portage is a source-based package manager. That means it downloads the source distribution of a package, and builds it on your machine, with compiler flags set for your cpu, etc.

The big advantages of this are that it eliminates a large source of the "dependency hell" that RPM based distros suffer from. You don't have to upgrade/downgrade so many libraries and other packages because you are building and linking with the libraries on your own system.

The other big advantage is that you can use optimized compiler flags. For example, compiling with "-march i686" instead of "-march i386" (the default for most binary distros) will increase performance 5%-20% on 686 and later cpus. There are compiler flags for the Athlon XP, Athlon classic, P4, etc...

The big disadvanges are the slow speed of package installs, as you have to wait for the package to build, and the fact that portage is pretty lame when it comes to allowing you to use your own options to "configure" (but then, with RPM, you don't get to add configure options at all, unless you install the source rpm, and that is even worse then portage for that sort of thing.)

So if you want maximum performance and flexability with minimum hassle, gentoo can be a good choice.

same as mandrake though. Enigma couldn't have used it too well then. What I do, is add sites like Raven and stuff to my media. Then I can either browse the categories, or search for the software. It tells me what dependancies I need, and marks them for installation too. I can also get a custom source-built program if I get a source RPM ;)

Also, does portage let you un-install too? URPMI does. Not sure about Portage. And yes, Mandrake has the 2nd best installer for the OS out of ALL OS installers, for ease of use. The #1 best installer ever is YaSt for SuSe. I have tried almost every distro except for Gentoo, but it really isn't on par (IMHO) with the rest of the distros.

Ah well, the only way to really know for sure is to try it. Which means cleaning off my Open Desktop installation on the "Distro-test" HD ;)

Portage lets you un-install completely... either just that package, just it's deps, or both! And it will also select only orphaned deps and uninstall them!

And what makes Gentoo not "on par" with the rest of the distros?

Personally, I like it more because it allows for so much more flexability... Mandrake comes pre-installed with a bootloader, and a specific set of packages, but then you have to go through this huge list and add or remove the ones that you want or don't... With gentoo, if you know what you want, all you have to do is type a simple command and it will go get it for you! You don't even have to find it on the internet!!

The only thing is that Gentoo isn't as sutable to newbies as Mandrake or Redhat is because it isn't _as_ user friendly (no GUI install, no config programs), but by the same token, my experience with config programs is that the settings don't stay, and they overwrite any manual settings that you have already set in place...

Granted, Mandrake's RPM package managment is _pretty good_ and better than most, but Gentoo has really sold me :)

BTW: What distros have you tried? I've tried Mandrake 7.1, 8.0, 9.0, 9.1, Redhat 8.0, Fedora Core 1, Slackware 9.0, and some BSD (i forget what flavor)... anyways, Gentoo is (for me anyway) a step above the rest.

**end rant ;-) **

reasons 2) and 6) for me ;)

actually trying Debian, it's said to have a *good* binary packages management system. Only 2 days that i installed it so i lack some bit of experience with upgrading to say.

About Gentoo, sure it's for now the only distro that i know for a long time that does a 100% satisfaction on package install and upgrade. Also very easy and efficient on compiling third party experimental apps/games/drivers. I think that compiling the whole system is a bit exxagerated, but at least this system is really designed to build from source so it's very straightforward to compile anything from source.

(innovati)

Distros I've tried:

Mandsrake 8-10 (all versions inbetween)

Redhat 7, 8, 9

SuSe 8

Debian (woody and the other one)

Slackware (9)? (one of the slacks anyways)

Dyne:bolic (if it's considered a distro ;) )

Fedora

Custom built linux

DSL

BBC Linux

Knoppix (KDE on debian)

Gnoppix (gnome on debian)

Lindows

Open Desktop

and many many many more (including dozens of little boot CDs)

Other OSes I've used recently: (as in the last week)

FreeDOS, BeOS, NetBSD, Mobius, MenuetOS... a few other lesser known ones

And, out of all of those....I rate SuSe, Linspire and Mandrake as #1.

more mis-conceptions:

During the mandrake install, the packages you have on the discs are everything from office suites, to the GIMp, to apache server modules, to flowcharting apps.

You don't *have* to go and hand pick each package, you can go with some nice defaults, but...you have the option of going through, selecting each package, seeing a short descriptiion of what it does, it's importance to the OS, and it's size.

Also, trhoughout the installation, it's very easy to do what you want. It autoconfigures all hardware, and asks if what it has detected is what you want it to run as (you can then change or make corrections). Also, you can re-partitions your drive with it, in a nice graphical way. Just click on the partition, and drag it bigger or smaller, change file system type by clicking a button, or go into advanced mode, where you type in specifics. All graphically.

Seriously, Mandrake is way ahead of any other distro IMHO, I continue to look around, but always keep coming back to Mandrake because it's the best i've seen. Linspire is very nice, but not as powerful, SuSe is more graphical but a tad less powerful.

Also, i'm at the point where I don't like Desktop environments anymore, I'm going into Super-user mode, where i want a window manager, and a console at all times. I have done extensive WM/Desktop environment looking too, the ones I can remember trying are:

KDE,
Gnome,
Enlightenment,
Blackbox (like it a lot)
Fluxbox (for people whjo are too good for BB)
FVWM,
IceWM,
WAIMEA (good)
looked at XPDE (didn't like)
IonWM,
EvilWM, (it's evil)
Window Maker,
Openstep (i think it was)
Sawfish (FAST and light)
Looking Glass 3D (TONS of potential)
and many more....soon to try OpenCroquet, made by my hero Alan Kay!!

so...as you can see, I have looked around quite a bit, and know my stuff.

The only reason that i have not tried Gentoo, is because I feel it lacks. It doesn't do anything the others do, except the others do it better. Why should I? I dunno, I WILL try it eventually, but right now, i have more important things to worry about.

Don't forget to mention that portage allows you to install binaries aswell! (e.g. "emerge openoffic-bin")

#19: gentoo\'s quoted optimisation bonus

by JonD on 09/07/2004 00:53

I\'m a debian user and I have played around with gentoo to try and cut through the myth and get to the heart of why it is a viable distro.

In short, I can see that dynamic dependencies provided by USE flags are an advantage over the static-approach debian uses.

However I am bemused by the common belief that the system is significantly more efficient by compiling it for a specific architecture- e.g. i686 instead of i386 (lowest common denominator).

DrRatchet, you quote 5%-20% speed increase for gentoo compiled for an i686 over the same setup compiled for i386. Where did you get this figure from? What type of usage (e.g. which programs) and how was the measurement made etc. etc.? I ask because I don\'t believe it. I\'ve never seen a proper, scientific experiment to measure the relative efficiency of such compilations. All the discussion on the topic has been from a \'it feels faster\' POV which is no good for me.

Clearly the binaries will be faster, but I do not believe that the difference will be human-detectable for the majority of programs.

Regarding a base-distro for a cube livecd based on linux; any advantages that gentoo conveys due to being source-based are nullified by the fact the CD will be a pre-compiled, lowest-common-denominator (unless you think a compile-when-you-boot source livecd is a good idea :P)

by why wont it let me log in??? on 09/08/2004 01:44

ugh, then if they do have a slow machine....they'll be sitting there for an hour (maybe 5) as the OS/games compile. People want to PALY, not wait. It would have as much loading time as a Playstation ;)
