I got a real bad cpu it has less than 500 mhz and only an 8mb video card will cube still work on it?

It might run, but a geforce2 will run it well and it's super cheap.

#4: Celeron or not?

by innovati on 08/20/2004 19:28

Hmmm, it might run it at 640 x 480. I have a 500 mZh Celeron, and it is *just* not enough to run Cube. It also has NO 3D acceleration.

The only way to find out is to try it. I also found out that Cube plays better at 800x600 than it does 640x480 or 1024x768 on my machine. But on my friends machine, it will only run at 800x600, any higher and it can't handle it, any lower and it doesn't work at all.

In case youdon't know, the way you change your resolution is to make a new batch file that says:

bin/cube.exe -w640 -h480

Then save it as lowres.bat. A new batch file called lowres should appear in the folder, then you can play Cube at 640x480. the -w stands for width (in pixels), and the -h for height (in pixels). You can change these to whatever resolution you want, just keep the ratio the same and make sure your graphics card can handle that resolution.

I hope you can get it working, e-mail me at innovati@innovatived.ca if you have trouble making the batch file.

333 Celeron is *adequate* but 3D is required. 8 MB tells very little except a likelihood it's not good enough. Cube would probably run great on a modern card if it had only 8 MB but of course no one makes such a thing. TNT or maybe i740 is about minimum, but some much more powerful(?) cards fail on driver issues... anyone get a Matrox to work?

#6: probably the CPU wont be a problem

by D.plomat on 08/22/2004 22:17

already ran it decently (+-30fps) @800*600 on a 550MHz CPU with an on board i810 video... just that on medium and little maps... with something less you ll manage to play only @640*480 on the smallest maps

it seems the video is much more important than the CPU, so if you´ve a PCI slot free you can try to find a GeForce 2 PCI and give it a try, provided it´s compatible with this PC it won´t probably give good fps on the biggest maps (where the CPU might become a limiting factor) but it will make a decent poor man´s cubing box.

But obviously you need a true 3D OpenGL accelerated card, if not (tested it for the fun on a 450MHz but with an ATI "3D" Rage II (in fact an old Mach 64 chipset i think)... 1fps!)

> "where the CPU might become a limiting factor"

-stupid assumption... never even tested this config nor did profiling tests on the Cube code... the best way to tell for sure is ... testing it... have fun :)

Anyone tested this config of a very ñodest CPU anÕÝOðdisproportionated 3D accelerator?

Cele 333 + GeForce 4 MX DDR PCI ... slighty better than 333 + TNT (wqd 8000 = 7-10 FPS), clearly weaker than AMD XP 2000+ + GF2. But then Cele 333 is pretty weak compared to P2 450 even.

#9: i talk rubbish

for cube i would be thinking that a computer with a 350 mhz processor 96 mb ram and a 32 mb video card bought within the last 3 years would run cube well.

the software TnL thingy kills old processors and most old video cards have to use it so maybe get a newer $20 video card.

btw if you have an integrated video card and only 64 mb of ram you are going to get very bad performance.
