Request - FreeBSD Binary Client Compatible with Servers

by raw on 06/29/2004 16:51, 9 messages, last message: 08/22/2005 12:11, 1160 views, last view: 04/28/2024 19:16

I would like to request that a FreeBSD binary client be distributed with the main package from now on. I have built cube from the freebsd ports system and it runs perfectly fine, I am also running with linux compatibility enabled, but since freebsd places all of the SDL stuff in a completely different place than it does in linux I have been completely unsuccessful in running the linux binary and playing online. Single player is fun, but multiplayer is what I live for. Thanks.

I was always under the impression that FreeBSD could just run the linux binary? If so that would certainly be the easier solution as there are very few FreeBSD players. If not... we'll have to work out something, eihrul may be able to make FreeBSD builds.

Never got the linux binary to run on FreeBSD. Once you get all those nasty libraries in the right place, the game will start, but (at least here) the network won\'t work. So you\'re left alone on a map with nobody to shoot. Another nice possibility would be to have servers speaking both protocols :-)

#4: We just need to make a FreeBSD client

Compiling the source (from my FreeBSD port) was easy enough for me!
it should be as easy for eihrul!

Come on just make a gawd dayum BSD client! ;)

#5: FreeBSD client needed no more!

The Cube windows client works perfectly with Wine now! Even the multiplayer!

For multiplayer all you need to do is :
1. visit the \'Servers\' section on this website.
2. Pick the one you want to play on.
3. IF the IP is not mentioned for that server, resolve the hostname (using nslookup or any other DNS client you want.)
4. bring up a shell and go to /usr/ports/games/cube/work/cube
(install the port first)
5. type: sudo wine bin/cube.exe
(yes it must run as root because it might need to dl maps and such in multiplayer,so if your username is not in the sudoers list, ADD IT.)
6. while in game press the console key (by default it\'s \'~\') and type \'connect <IP_of_the_server>\' (eg. /connect 1.2.3.4)

----------------------------
NOTE : Sauerbraten also works with wine the same way! (sudo wine bin/sauerbraten.exe)

#6: Well...

Well... I could run it from my home dir but I\'m lazy. So I run it as root from ports so it can DL maps and stuff to the work dir in /usr/ports/games/cube/work/cube :D.
And besides, what\'s Cube going to do anyways :/... trust me it hasn\'t hurt anything and I don\'t think it will.

The reason that there are no FreeBSD builds is quite simple: I don't have access to a FreeBSD box to compile on.

If someone is really desperate for this, he should contact Aardappel and arrange something.

1. I doubt so...well it might work for Dragonfly..;)
2. No, why would you want to do that?

I've googled a bit, and their seems to be some experimental NetBSD driver for nvidia.
The nvidia driver for FreeBSD works (for me) just as good as the driver for linux(my fps is even slightly higher).
