if you have winzip installed, just doubleclicking the .gz will open it.

Aard, I think you're gonna have to release this as a zip file or even better yet a self-extractor for these people. Windows XP has native support for .zip files, but apparently .tar.gz is just too hard for these poor folks to figure out. Ya need an unzipper (any unzipper will do) to get tar.gz.

I know the old motto is "don't blame the user" - but they're making this really, really hard.

It says "This application has failed to start because MSVCR71.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

The following will hold your hand a bit through the install and startup procedure: http://www.intergate.com/~spentron/cube/cube.html

I'm guessing you didn't extract everything or didn't extract using folders.

its always something... before I had the linux n00bs not knowing how to use chmod, now I have the windows n00bs who don't know how to use winzip/winrar... or even worse, how to start a program if it doesn't come with an installer.

I don't know what to do here. I don't feel like literring SF with 2 identical archives just to please kind of people. It is not my goal to reach the maximum amount of people with cube.

Totally agree... well, as beiing not a newbie user myself i don't have much merit for that, but i think that if Cube gives a motivation to either make Linux noobs learn to use chmod, or the Windows noobs install a decent archive utility that's a good thing... and even if it would be easy to use specific installer formats like exe, msi, rpm, deb..., well... a program that doesn't put stuff in the registry or other is a way cleaner and elegant 1-step install method for 2 platforms :)

Unfortunately there aren't many programs targetting also non-technical ppl that runs on both platforms so as there are still some glitches with installation procedures, until either zips accepts *nix permissions or Win* natively supports .tar.gz

Anyway, i'm using a lot of application with support for both platforms and all that i can say is that Cube is by far the one for which the intallation procedure is the most similar on both OSes, and also very simple for the average user.

GEEEZ

We can't help you with any filezip problems...

Here's the whole thing in a few easy steps:

1) Go get Winzip or Ultimatezip.
2) Open the Cube archive in the zip app.
3) Open the archive inside the other archive
4) Extract all files to a folder that you will remember
5) go to that folder and look for a folder named "Cube"
6) Double-click the file that is named cube.bat

There you go. It's not that hard.

Maybe something tiny and seperate could set the chmod's? But it is kind of hard to completely avoid computer basics.

I think the deal is more of a pathological inability to read help files... it does, after all, say readme for a reason :P.
