Yes.
You can do it in the console, but it won't be saved into the config file, and therefore will only work in that session :/
Cube doesn't save any config data (except MP server data, I think) so you must get used to modding your configs.

Oh, it's friendly enough, and I like to help, I just wish people would either read the docs or experiment just a little more before posting.
I don't even mind questions that could be answered directly from the readme, provided it's obvious that a bit of time has been spent trying to understand the documentation...

did i hear fal damage!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
what horror, realism is evil. the hole point of video games is to make it so you can do things you cant normaly do. to make it realisitc defeats that purporse! it is no fun when you do that, plus you can do more things with layouts if you jump from high places.

Yeah, uhhh, I read the documentation several times and messed around with trying to insert a model for hours before coming here to ask. And as far as understanding the documentation goes please tell me exactly what there is to understand about "See data/models.cfg."? Yeah that explains a lot.
In fact the whole description for the mapmodel command is not exactly the most noob friendly explanation and there is nothing in the tutorial that runs you through using models.
Thanks for being condescending though. You young punks should welcome new people into this community if you want it to grow.

young? i'm 37 next week.
punk? i'm goth.
to insert a new mapmodel, add the following at the end of your models.cfg:
loadmodel "xxyyzz" [xxyyzz has to be replaced by the directory that contains your model data (tris.md2 and skin.jpg). this directory must be in *cube*\packages\models\]
mapmodel x y z [x y z being explained in the documentation!]
keep in mind that with the next release there will be a new models.cfg that is NOT optional and will overwrite your changed models.cfg. that means, you'll see the wrong models in your maps and you'll have to change all maps again if you insist on including unofficial models in your maps... ;-)

I'm sorry; I was genuinely not trying to be condesending.
I will and do help where it's obvious that some prior effort has been made to understand.
I know the docs are not perfect, it's just the questions like 'I've *just* downloaded Cube and I can't use the arrow keys like in Quake/can't work out SP mode/don't like the look of it/want it to play like Counterstrike/want to map using Q3Radiant etc., etc. that put my back up slightly.
BTW, I'm 37 too... It's a funny old world

From MitaMAN, you guys are just kids to me!! I'm an old fart of 47 that loves learning 3D stuff and fragging. Should I spend more time with wife / kid?
Anyway, how can we perk up interest in Cube (single player for me)? I've been messing with CUBE since Christmas and when I read the forums it's mostly the same 8-12 people. Does anyone really play this game? It's fun and "easy" to create maps (2 single player maps so far, 3rd on way) but whats the point with no (small) fan base. Is it mostly deathmatch that the interest is going to?
Enough of my Bla Bla Bla...

Theres a big lot of lurkers on the forums. And most people will never show up on the cube forms / irc channel or download custom maps, they just use what comes with cube.

Well, I myself am 32 and generaly I find that its usually l337 dorks who act all high and mighty about newbies coming into their clique. Sorry to jump down yer throat.
Anyway, my issue with models is that I just want to spruce up my maps a little. My concept for my first set of SP maps is that you had to make an emergency landing in your space ship and I wanted to have a spacecraft model of some kind in the courtyard area where you start out in the first map. As you all know there is nothing like that is Cube's supported models.
