#3824: Re: Player Run Speed

by Quin on 10/19/2008 19:41, refers to #3822

Blood Frontier supports movespeed, among other physics variables, to be defined on a per-map basis; allowing the mapper to decide almost everything about how their level plays. We're yet to fully implement the AI though.

Question seems to come up alot, I dunno if that helps or not really.

Yes it can import any existing Sauerbraten FPS map, but you will need to retexture the level yourself unless you've used your own textures.

#3827: SP mapper looking for opportunities

by NULL-Pointer on 10/24/2008 07:24

Hi Guys!

First of all, my apologies for the unusual length of this post. I really just don't know where else to put such a thing. So admins feel free to (re)move this post, but at least tell me why you did.

Admittably I am very new to Sauer, but nevertheless I want to bring the single player part to something useful. I know that it has been neglected so far, but SP is my thing, and I just fell in love with Sauer's efficiency, simplicity, and great visuals. And the map editor of course, which is, IMHO, quite outstanding.

As such, I am looking for opportunitis to participate in single player mapping, or in SP episode compilations. If necessary, I would even be willing to lead a project, but only if there is nothing similar already in the works.

I did my research, bud didn't find much about SP. Some bits about AI source mods etc. but very few maps. But I think that Sauer already has the most important bits for SP included, and want to create some really impressive SP maps, in the hope as to get something going in SP development, and as a base therefore to draw from.

I really don't want to start a mod or something. I didn't even have a look into the source. I just want Sauer to have a worthy SP part. And I think that maps are the key to get this started. As long as there are )(almost) no SP maps, nobody will play SP, and if nobody plays it, there will be no maps created etc. etc.

This may sound like a tall tale. And I admit that I don't know if this is a worthy goal. I just know that it is to me, and hope that there are some like-minded others.

Here is some info about my capabilities, both positive and negative (trying to be very honest, as to not disappoint anybody):

CON me (first 'cause probably more important):
- Not too good at texture making, therefore mainly using stock ones.
- Can't produce output every day (sorry), but will try to do as often as possible.

PRO me:
- Back in its days, I created some single player maps for Quake (the First and True one, that is), but they seem to have disappeared from FilePlanet/PlanetQuake. At least I can't find them any more. I used WordCraft, which became Hammer, and still use it for my Blitz3D stuff.
- Currently working on a HUGE sauer SP map, depicting a whole futuristic tower city. I intend to turn this into an SP episode, but won't be able to tackle this alone (or it would take a long time). Although the map is large and quite open, it will be optimised for speed. I have a rather dated rig myself, which makes for a good benchmark.
- I am able to do scripting. Did not much of that yet, but I am a programmer, so I would quickly work into it, as needed. But actually I am using Sauer as a way to get a break from coding, so don't expect something like HK's menus from me. I'd rather churn out some maps, doing map scripting as needed.

I don't intend to "lead a project", or initiate one, so if someone is already doing some SP stuff for sauer which I missed, I would gladly join as a mapper.

But if really nobody is interested in Sauer SP at all, I might just be the first one that is, and try to do some stuff on my own. But SP is about stories, which are always lots of work. So I'd really appreciate some help.

Stories, btw., can be constructed of simple elements such as "This door is opened elsewhere", so Sauer's current possibilities could be just enough to do some awesome stuff.

So, if I woke your interest, or if you want to tell me that I better stop with this crap, please tell me.

Thanks to anyone reading this long post.

~Pointer

#3828: Distributing light more evenly

by Redshit on 10/24/2008 10:40

hi folks,

For some reason its hard to distribute light evenly, especially in hallways
and small to medium rooms..what ends up happening i will play with the radius and
i will get to a point where the room is lit, but there will be intense bright spots on the roofs or walls...
then i try to use smaller lights and then
i get the room all lit.. but theres darker spots... and then ill fill in the darker spots and then i create brighter spots lol any help would be appreciated.

Usually i just edit for fun, so I make multiplayer maps or build maps with friends, but im currently working on an sp map and i know that cubescript makes it possible to do "story"-things way beyond "this door is opened elesewhere" :P

However, i wanted to do the sp map that i'm talking about on my own, but i'd like to help you with your futuristic sp-city-campaign, sounds like an interesting thing :)

I dont know what you mean with "huge", but i'd say that you shouldnt just care about size, but also about quality - well please post a reply ^^

Well... You can't, without reloading the map or modding the source.

If it's coopedit, a sendmap and a getmap should do it.

I personally have modded the source so that ammo APPEARS, but doesn't actually give you anything when you pick it up. (It also won't respawn.)
For those interested, (admittedly simlpe) patch here:

That\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s bad :( why is co-op edit mode a bit limited? Like no monsters? it would be fun to make a map with monsters the run trough it with a friend :)

Do you have a link to the CVS? I have no idea what it is 0.0 sorry.

There is no single-player coop. However, if you would like to implement it, go right ahead.
