ATTENTION SERVERS - DOUBLE OGRO FIX

by eihrul on 01/12/2004 05:48, 35 messages, last message: 04/14/2004 13:44, 10709 views, last view: 05/25/2024 02:40

I have made up some experimental servers that I *THINK* will fix the double ogro problem. These are protocol compatible with the current release.

I urge all current servers that are experiencing ogro duplication problems to try the following binaries out (for freebsd or linux):

http://tunes.org/~eihrul/freebsd_server
http://tunes.org/~eihrul/linux_server

Anybody running these experimental servers, please announce you are doing so and what IP/name you are, as I would also like players to ascertain whether they subsequently experience double ogro problems on said servers, and post results here!

#1: Are there any?

by D.plomat on 01/13/2004 11:16

servers actually using those new servers so i can test them?

If not, i'll put one online for testing, but it's only a 512/128 DSL, already loaded with other protocols, and it's behind a NAT so i'll forward 28765/6 of my NAT box to my K6-300 server (file and database server).

So i think my configuration isn't very representative of what other servers are, but if that can help...

Also, many are saying that once they have this bug, they keep it whichever server they connect to, so must we state that ppl must connect to this server first for testing, or will the new binaries correct the problem for ppl that already had it if they connected to other server?

Just the last things: i can make a tcpdump capture of this server's Cube traffic and send it to you if you want.

If you prefer not having the NAT i can try to put the server binary directly on the NAT box, but it's a 486DX2/66 with ultra-minimalist Linux (no libc) and in this case i won't be able to make a tcpdump capture.

Sorry for the 403 errors, I forgot to make the files readable in my web directory. They should be downloadable now.

godzilla.uib.no runs this version (linux).
Big thanks to eihrul for fixing this issue (hopefully) and for making the files available.

Played a lot on godzilla.uib.no, didn't had the bug so it appears to be ok with this new server binary :) :)

of intense cubing on godzilla.uib.no, up to 10ppl :)

No one experienced the bug so this appears to be fixed.
(on other servers i still have the bug)

I hope that other servers will also upgrade quickly...

Thanx eihrul for this fix, and in general for this awesome net library :)

Eihrul: is the fix entirely within enet and do you intend to release the source for it?

We're going to rerelease once we work out all the bugs players are finding right now. And yeah, the bug is solely in the new version of ENet that was distributed with the latest release. But that ENet also happened to fix various sendmap bugs, so the new ENet for better or worse is necessary. :)

I noticed a problem in Spillway in that many of the bridges are not mapmodel 1 but mapmodel 2. One of them was mapmodel 198 or something like that. I must have been playing with lights at the time. The problem with that is that everything is fine until that jumppad model comes along (which maybe should be included with the game). I'd like to piggyback on your update by fixing that in the map.

hello,

may I hijack this thread? please let me continue:

1) if there is a new release, please eiruhl do the package, or aard do it on a linux box, with correct unix permissions (644 for data, 755 for executables) imagine linux users having the same comfort as their windows peers, just clicking the batch in the filemanager :)

2) may I ask, if there is a way to have the server info port not encrypted? (to allow local serverbrowsers, that is) for game security it should be enough to crypt the game port. (I think the "official" build does encryption in enet, so it maybe too complicated for soon)

thanx.

hungerburg

I fixed up the mapmodel 2 problem in Spillway:

If you could include the fixed version in the update I'd appreciate it.

is there an easy way I can set those permissions from windows?

Yes there will be a new release, but only once I have sorted out any other bugs with this release. The most vital (hah!) one being the invincibility bug. Haven't heard any reports of that lately, is it still happening, or did it go away with the enet fix? ;)

Yes feel free to hijack this thread for the purpose of discussing urgent fixes that need to go into this release. Feature requests still go elsewhere.

by pushplay on 01/19/2004 04:46

I know that it seems like wishful thinking, but I've looked through all the logic related to damage myself and I can't find anything wrong with it. The problem is probably in enet and it's not inconceivable that it's already fixed. The problem is that it never was a common bug and you may never know for sure. ;)

well I hope that fixed it, but I hate these kinds of potential bugs floating around. If anyone experiences this bug again, let me know asap, and remember which server it happened on (patched or not?) what gameplay mode, etc.

do any of the permanent servers on the net run on win32?

If by permanent you mean someone like me that leaves one running 24/7 aside from rare reboots...then yes. And it would be nice to not worry about it when browsing the server list for a game.

I've taken mine down for the time being...as this bug shows up way too much.

>I've taken mine down for the time being

I wish more would do this if they're not going to fix it. MOST of the ones appearing in the browser are bad, I even see people playing and get on and can't play. Possibly aggravated by modem.
Bad servers I've found so far (partial names):
tiggerswelt.net
supports.game-monster.de
ny-dunkirk...adelphia.net
cindy.coldmoon (ping champ)
dak0r.de
66.214.199.???
Different cube protocol:
flits.rug.nl
scott.blazing.de
