maxroll should be zero by default

by b2591291 on 01/06/2012 19:18, 23 messages, last message: 01/10/2012 21:59, 4555 views, last view: 04/30/2024 20:54

Rationalize: this option only makes harder to hit enemy while dodging, so it is just skill penalty for many players.

P.S. Also it would be nice to have option for making pow weapon models smaller and/or transparent.

We can't really turn everything off for the sake of professional players wishing things were made default the way they like it. I don't think this will be happening. The closest you're likely to get is a setting for turning it off, perhaps, but even then.. it's a few keystrokes away.

The "maxroll" command actually isn't providing a less good aim. Why?
- You can get used to it.
- You can put it to such high setting so you'll have more few even just on a lower field of view. (Making a script for this would be an extension on that).
- The chance of hitting your enemy won't be smaller actually, if you would incalculate the 3degrees (which brings us back to being used of having maxroll at 3).

What's the problem after all? Just put /maxroll 3 in your autoexec and never look back for it.

#6: KEEP IT REAL...

I like maxroll! It would be even more realistic with camera+model roll! Just think how interesting the game would be if you stumble on stairs running sideways! XD

Well, when putting maxroll on 20, makes you feel like your sitting in a small aircraft, which probably will be hard to realise for models...

Well, I disagree with your statements.

Firstly, "aiming" is not all about game mechanics. On fullhd, with fov around 110 such rotation cause very unpleasant psychological effects. You get additional virtual motion and perspective distortion. It makes harder to estimate the real position and speed of objects especially for those, that are visible at the borders of screen. And the worth effect is that your own position and motion is not very evident. A clear RL and SG skill penalty.

The second part, is that that such option adds nothing to the game experience. Such epileptic rotation is very unrealistic, and I believe that it is just implemented wrongly. Instead of fast rotation when side-way motion begins, it should slowly rotating +/-maxroll around 0 when your simply moving in any direction. So it will simulates smooth head swaying when your running. I'm not insisting on this, but currently maxroll behavior is very wired and annoying.

P.S. Weapon swaying works in similar way.

Well, it is not about smth called "pro", it is just unreasonable default. There are some things that currently cannot be customized at all, but maybe i start another thread for those, because they are a matter of personal taste (not defaults).

I think this is rather a psychological problem. If you once noticed it and found it to be annoying, it will maybe affect your gameplay, but not because it's there, but because you think about it. I've been playing for 4-5 years, and I never even noticed it.

Now, if all the top players tell me they somehow switched it off, I might change my opinion, but for now I say: Just don't think about it, it doesn't do any harm if you don't care.

I've been playing for 5 years (count me top, if you like), and never found this rolling pleasant. Many "get used to it", is not the case for new players anyway. It is really a _common practice_ to turn off such effects.

Anyway dev are free to choose, but for me this thread gives no convincing arguments to use maxroll in any possible case.

P.S. It is not only psychological, it is physiological. Additional fake screen motion -> hard to analyze quickly -> time and nerves to "get used to it".

1: So what you mean to tell me is that you suck at this game so much, and that you lack any focus that you can't use the default? And on top of that you have been playing for five years? Dude you suck.

2: And no, it is not common for noobs to change maxroll. Half of them don't even know how to claim master or even change their name without the GUI. Don't be ridiculous.

3: Why bring it up now after all this time, hm?

Why so offensive?

I see no reason why the default config shouldn’t deliver the best experience as possible in most cases. Such simple change with maxroll will move default config towards this. It's my opinion, and i've rationalized it as best as i could.

by Honzik1 on 01/09/2012 20:01

Maxroll should be on zero. Do you know anybody, who know what is it and he/she use it? These people doesnt use it, so it should be usefull to make it turned off by default.

There are about 230 parameters in config.cfg ....Why there arent comments????

Even I dont know what are half of them and I am playing this game for years. I am sure there are not all of them in the Options in-game menu.

To Honzik:

the config.cfg is written on exit, as the COMMENTS imply, and it's where all the settings are saved.

You, on the other hand, are by NO MEANS supposed to save your shit in there, and if you do, you deserve losing them at any point the unfortunate happens.

To the dude with lots of numbers:

"I see no reason why the default config shouldn’t deliver the best experience as possible in most cases"

Look, the game tries to compromise between the best of looks and the best of gameplay, so it's pretty much fine as it is. You, of course, are free to change any setting available to give yourself an edge over the others who are either too lazy to do so or too dumb. I respect your request to turn if off, i don't like it much either.. but it's only a simple thing to type.

Yes, we get quite a few people asking how to turn the roll off, and we have to answer every time. Maybe the feature will be turned off for the next release, maybe it will be given a switch in the options, who knows.

Thanks for sharing your opinion, i think we're done discussing this thingy.

Lets add a "maxviewbob" var, default=20.

To Razgriz,
Well, putting in the option-gui would be a very good compromise between those who bitch about that it should be turned on on default and the persons who just don't give a damn.

To baby~rabbit,
I would actually love to see something like a screenbob, similar to QuakeLive and currently also Red Eclipse has. Of course, this should also be putted into the option-gui...

By the way, it's not possible to make hudguns smaller (if that is what you mean, but you can "zoom" them out by using the "avatarfov" command.
If you were talking about the vweps, just change them with "mdlscale".

1 multiplied by 2 is? (6*4-2²)/10

#21: GOT GRIT?...

by Zamwa on 01/10/2012 18:57

To guy with numbers, honzikl, razgriz, suicizer,
Look at how the best games on the market are made to be real, challenging, annoying, unpredictable as much as possible cause for the majority of us gamers simple is boring!
No matter how small the detail of a game mechanic that affects multiplayer making an option to turn it off is cheating other players of that experience!

The best games on the market have developers who get made for making that shit, not the other way around. :P
