Now I know cube's map editor is already easy to use, but here are some tips to make it even easier.
1. On top part of editor screen there should be simple toolbar with basic stuff like new map, save map, some predefined grid sizes and some buttons to make primitives other than cubes (spheres, cylinders, pyramids, etc.) and so-called negative primitives (they'll place hole in the shape of said primitive in the ground/wall). This will make mouse-oriented people life easier (those shortcuts and commands are sometimes hard to remember)
2. Help screen with basic shortcuts under F1 like in Marble Arena. So we don't have to quit cube games every time we want to check shortcut (first point will already make things easier, but some things will still be faster to achieve using keyboard).
3. Make separate gui windows instead of one big Editing screen. This may be not implemented, but certainly will make things placed more logically.

1.A: newmap and savemap are in the F3 window. You can quicksave too with F5. Simple keys you must admit.
1.B: Why should we define default grid sizes? We can adjust them so damn easily. G and mousehwheel, what is so hard to remember about it? If you use the editor a bit more you quickly get that and other keys in your head. You just have to get familiar with it.
1.C: Practice. Practice practice practice.
2. Keep the webbrowser open in the background. Alt-Tab is your friend. Windows has it, most Linux have it and in the general post I saw even Mac has it. Just don't look at particle type 3 while changing the window, that always causes delay by me till the next frame in SB renders.
3. Write your own, it is easy.

About which game are you actually talking about?
I ask this because cube engine (classic) has a separate way of editing (and shortkeys), Sauerbraten has a separate way of editing and Red Eclipse has a separate style of editing (again, like shortkeys, commands, etc).
