Good idea?

I'm thinking of making virtual reality desktop with cube engine. The user will be given virtual house where he/she will be able to place "3D icons" (actually entities) which would execute programs (3d icons like normal icons will be only representation - the user will have to specify program/folder/file to open).

I plan to use Cube so user will be able to reshape his/her house easily.

What do you think about it?

Also in the end I plan to make program windows rotatable in any axis (see sun's lg3d or lb3d [don't remember exact name] to see what I exactly mean), but it may be tricky especially with X11.

Sounds weird.

Assuming you know what you\\\'re getting yourself into and what you go on to make is no application determined to blow off your temper with endless bugs and resource hogging, sure, why not.

I don't think it'll have big bugs until I'll start to implement window warping/rotating which is only tricky part. First release will not even have it. What it will be is basically almost pure cube, with nixed multiplayer and most of entities types such as enemies. The only things that'll remain are models, which will be called decorations and 3D icons which would use same models as decorations and after click (a.k.a. shooting bullet from gun) will execute program via exec() which is easy.

Well, probably most people around here would like to wish you good luck with it and so do I...

Though now as I think about that, I'll probably use OctaForge as a base. It has more useful stuff already built-in and IMO Lua is easier than CubeScript, though it's only my opinion.

So, sounds interesting, and I like the interface concept, but is this an operating system, then?

No, it's a desktop manager. Something like KDE or gnome, though at first it won't be as advanced and won't have taskbar.
