Minecraft clones using Cube as backend?

by darkhog on 10/26/2011 14:41, 14 messages, last message: 10/27/2011 19:35, 3184 views, last view: 05/02/2024 07:53

Do you know of any MC Clones using Cube as backend? It seems natural to me to adapt Cube level editor to be in main game, like in minecraft and i'm almost sure someone thought about it too.

So, are there free (even as in beer) MC clones using Cube as it's engine?

To your question, no! Cube level editor layer & MC are close to nothing identical in code!

Interestingly there is a MC clone called Cubecraft!

@Zanwa: They don't have to be identical in code to be identical in gameplay. Also Manic Digger (free MC clone coded in C#) and Minecraft also have many things different code-wise, but both retain similar gameplay.

So it's not impossible to do such thing, though too hard for me to do so.

Anyway, thanks for your answer. I thought that someone thought of making MC clone in Cube, maybe this thread will inspire someone.

After mining through some forums I found this editor!
http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/13807-mcedit-minecraft-world-editor-compatible-with-mc-beta-18/

It looks close to the editor layer of cube 2 in terms of usability?!

Glad to help! :")

Nvm. I've re-read your post and now I get it you weren't saying it's on Cube

I'm actually not getting at all why people think Cube Engine (2) has any relation to MineCraft and visa-versa...

I guess because minecraft is using blocks which are presented by cubes. And Cube Engine is... well, Cube.
Cube - Cubes. Get it? For most people cubes are cubes, so it must be compatible in some way.

Just look at how mapping works in Cube Engine... :P That should answer your question. It's like quite cool base to create MC clone on.

Except lack of dynamic lighting/fast lightmap generation algorithm, but it can be changed.

But for making base for MC clone is more important to figure better way of co-op editing, so clients won't have to redownload map when it's changed and client-server communication would be limited to only send changes to geometry, not whole geometry, even not changed parts.

Oh, by the way - anti-spam method you used sucks. Not only require me and others to launch calculator when it is something different than addition or subtraction, but it is extremely easy to avoid for spambots (you only need to fetch numbers and what to do with them). ReCaptcha is far better and unbreakable.

http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/39593-minecraft-to-sauerbraten/

Basically he wrote an importer/exporter so you can minecraft levels in and out of sauerbraten. Due to various limitations/interests he moved on and started writing his own minecraft-like engine using Ogre, he wanted to build a fps minecraft - not sure where he's at now..

On topic: Seriously, what is it with everyone creating/looking for (free) Minecraft clones right now? Pay the guy for his work, he deserves it.
Also, the only thing Cube (2) and Minecraft have in common is cubes. That's it.

Off-topic:
"Not only require me and others to launch calculator when it is something different than addition or subtraction"
Wait a second. Are you actually telling us that you need a calculator for multiplying two single-digit numbers?!

"ReCaptcha is [...] unbreakable"
ReCaptcha is actually quite breakable. Dozens of papers have been written describing various ways of breaking it - just do a quick Google search. It's used widely all over the internet, so it makes sense to write tools to break it. On the other hand, theis forum is custom-made and (afaik) only used on this site. It just wouldn't pay off.

Guess what, this forum gets a lot less spam than those using "unbreakable" protection tools. I guess it's because there's no useless, but spam-attracting stuff like signatures here.

I actually paid for MC - see www.minecraft.net/haspaid.jsp?user=darkhog .
But it's always nice to see something different. And no, mod aren't option since there are incompatible with each other (watershader+industrial/buildcraft = blackscreen since watershader is not compatible with forgeapi). And litle quote from a Genius:
"Software is like sex. It's better when you don't have to pay for it.".

Frankly the only reason I bought MC is that Manic Digger and other free clones don't have redstone circuit-like mechanics (only exception for Script blocks but it's concentrated on building mechanisms itself and since there are so little textures you can't build normal buildings).
